[Sticky] Monterey Crash/kernel panics

@softraid-support No, it seemed to happen under normal operation. Nothing was unplugged. Time Machine MAY have been doing a backup at the time.

Unfortunately, I have no clue what triggered it. IODMA involves sending data from some piece hardware, through memory, but that is not much to go on.

Think I'm getting the same Thunderbolt DART error a lot of people here. 12.2.1 RAID 5. Whether I wait to plug it in for five minutes or it starts already mounted kernel panic after only a minute.

I saved your panic to a txt file for brevity.

If you startup with one disk pulled out then plug it in after 5 minutes does it still panic?

As I am sure you saw, we are still frustratingly waiting for an Apple fix on this.

You can also try RAID 4.

I did want to try RAID 4 but heads above mine want to try stick to RAID 5. In similar boat when it comes to fiddling with the physical disks.

However, uninstalling/installing the SoftRAID driver without the Thunderbay plugged in, and plugging it back in after a few minutes, gets things working until the M1 has to shut off / reboot. At which point, rinse/repeat.

I’d “like” to have to do it a few more times to say it’s a consistent workaround, but after a week of trying everything (save the first two suggestions) it’s the only “fix” that’s worked more than once, and for more than a few minutes. Probably not ideal for the longevity of the machine, but kernel panic power cycling every minute probably not great either.

One other thing you can try, if you have not loaded the volume with data yet, is RAID 5 with 64k stripe unit size. That is the "optimized for windows" configuration, but should work respectfully.

A Watchdog panic is often caused when macOS flushes the caches on your disks, and it takes more than 2 minutes, so the system panics. When you shut down, note each drive blinks for several seconds, one at a time (It is a Synchronous, one at a time process, not all at once, which is the problem). When users have lots of drives (more than 12, this happens nearly 100% of the time.)

Did this happen at shutdown? How many drives/enclosures do you have connected?

1 thunderbolt T3 Dock connect to 1 WD my book duo 20TB and 1 Lacie 4TB. Thunderbay 6 (with 3 12TB Drives) direct connect to computer. 

Any suggestions ?

Try removing one or two of the drives (LaCie and WD). You can unmount, unplug and see if you still get the shutdown panic. One Thunderbay is unlikely to do this, but you could try this also.

THere may be one of your disks that is shutting down slowly triggering this.

April 2, 2022:

Kernel Panic on OWC EXPRESS 4M2, going into MacBook Pro 14, M1 Max 

I had success for about a week with no problems, going Thunderbolt 3 into the MacBook, maybe I'd get a KP once a day, or something like that, but now, whenever I plug it in, we're lights out within 5 or so minutes. Almost every single time.

Use "save as plain text" in text edit, to make it a real .txt file.

If you wait 5 minutes before plugging it in, is there still a panic?

@softraid-support In general, it still panics. Time from restart is not a metric I'm tracking AS much, though. I'll keep an eye on it. 

Still can't upload txt, by the way- it says filetype not allowed, even after saving as plain text. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Get info on the file, making sure it is not something like .txt.rtf

When you make it Plain text with command shift T, and save, it should convert the file.

I have saved it in many plain text programs, many ways, and for some reason, nada. Also tried Chrome/Safari.
