[Sticky] Monterey Crash/kernel panics

We have a unit with this issue in Apple engineering, hoping for a fix soon.

This line in the panic: dart-apciec0 (0xfffffe150e2ad800): DART(DART) error: SID 2

tells you it is the Thunderbolt bus crashing. It affects a percentage of users it is something in the macOS installation, as a clean install on the same computer can work fine.

@softraid-support New M1 Max laptop, using 6.2.1b3, got my first TBT bus crash a few days ago while the machine was uploading to BackBlaze but otherwise idle. Tried to attach report here, but the forum doesn't seem to want a .txt or a .zip file extension? I did include the SR support file in case it's any help. Anyway, first line of the crash is our old pal:

panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffe002df95418): "dart-apciec0 (0xfffffe299979a000): DART(DART)

I did report it to Apple using the automatic thingy.

For whatever it's worth, it looks like in my particular setup (a RAID5, a RAID4, and several large RAID1+0s), the one implicated in the crash is *probably* a RAID5 volume (a ThunderBlade named "Fast External HD"). I see several lines like this one in my SR log:

Dec 23 20:02:13 - SoftRAID Driver: The SoftRAID volume "Fast External HD" (disk10) encountered an error (E00002C1). A program attempted to read or write to a volume which was not open.

Those don't correlate directly with the date and time of the crash, though. This line is pretty close, but may be a red herring:

Dec 25 15:34:37 - SoftRAID Application: Could not connect to SoftRAID Monitor, waited 0 seconds

In any case, so far it seems like the RAID1+0 arrays are stable? I hope that's the case, as those (plus the RAID4) are really the important parts of my workflow.

Question: Do you know/suspect that certain kinds of arrays are more prone to this type of crash? I know Apple is looking into it, but basically I wonder whether I should avoid using certain kinds of arrays (for instance RAID5) on this machine for now. I do have the latitude to switch things up to some extent if it helps w/stability. Of course the other option is just go back to the old Intel desktop until this is resolved.

this particular bug seems to only (or mostly) affect RAID 5 volumes. I have not seen any with RAID 0, 1+0 or even RAID 4. (I had a report on RAID 4, but I don't think it was the same issue)

Hopefully it will be fixed soon. the crash happens as soon as the volume attempts to mount, it seems. If you want, change it to a RAID 4 also and you won't have this issue.

Sure, I've attached the supt file with all volumes mounted. I updated to v6.2.1.b3 and Monterey 12.1 and it is still happening (kernel panics), and I'm still having the issue of a volume suddenly disappearing when I unplug even after unmounting, and not able to delete/erase volumes. They just keep remounting when I try to erase, or when I try to delete it gives me an error saying the volume is in use. Sorry I know this might be multiple issues. I have another thread also about being unable to delete the volume.

Lets see if when you delete the Time Machine volume, if the panic goes away. The eject messages should at least.

We do not have a fix for this yet.

There are three known workarounds:

Change to RAID 4 (100%)

Clean install (75%)

Startup with one disk removed, push it in a few minutes after startup. (90%)

Clean ... well my MacBookPro just arrived from Apple, can't get as clean as that I guess

Startup disk removed ... neither ...

 

ETA on the fix is ???

You did not import your old data? you created a new account only? I have not seen that panic, yet.

All I know is this is being actively investigated by Apple engineering.

Can you recreate your RAID 5 volume as RAID 4? (it is just as fast as 5)

Or use the trick of removing one disk at startup, then putting it in later?

About RAID 4 ... it is just that what I read is that the parity disk gets worn out too quickly

 

I did try the trick of pulling out the disk ... it lasted like 15 minutes until boom

That may have been true 25 years ago, but no longer. A google study of 100,000 disks showed HDD's wear out at the same rate regardless of whether they are used lightly or heavily.

I would not worry about disk wear.

SSD's would wear out somewhat sooner, yes. But the benefit you get is 15% faster read performance. And you can replace that one disk if it did wear out.

As far as we know, Apple engineering does not have a fix yet. I will test on M1 this weekend, I think I have a system that reproduces this still. But I don't think so.
