Hello, I am running MAC OS X Elcapitan (10.11.6). Is there an easy way to encrypt my RAID 5? Want to ensure that I don't damage anything.
Thanks!
Sorry, no there is not.
the only way to encrypt data is put sensitive data on an encrypted sparse bundle.
(Sparse bundles will be much faster than disk images)
When High Sierra is released, and when SoftRAID has support for APFS, we expect to be able to offer encryption on APFS volumes. We cannot predict a time line, there are too many variables, but it is something we are working hard on already.
Hi! Just bought nice ThunderBay 6 and Express 4M2 enclosures. And I am going to use SoftRAID. Are there any plans for encryption within SoftRAID for Apple MacOS?
Thanks.
SoftRAID version 6.
We are expecting a late spring release.
Encryption will require converting the volume to APFS.

Good news! Converting all volumes to APFS is little price for having encryption finally available!
If I can also recommend anything – some a bit less PC-style (a copy of ThunderBay 4) and more "minimal design" icons for volumes would be appreciated!

Is SoftRAID 6 still expected to be released this spring... think we're officially in summer now. :)
Just curious because I can't wait to use encryption (with APFS) with it!
SoftRAID 6 is still a ways from release.
We do have encryption working on SoftRAID volumes, but there are still issues before we can recommend APFS encryption. We are working with Apple on those.
I would have to push predictions to the fall at this time.
What about encryption of HFS+ volumes? I need this for my time machine backups and APFS is not an option for TM.

SoftRAID 6 will support APFS encrypted volumes in the future.
There is no chance that HFS encrypted volumes can be supported, that is a Core Storage technology, which is essentially dead.
Time machine under Catalina does not support encrypted SoftRAID volumes at this time in our testing either. We are awaiting developments.
Uggh. Hopefully Apple upgrade Time Machine tech in the next OS and move on from HFS+ then.
They have, Time Machine in Catalina requires APFS, but will not support SoftRAID encrypted volumes yet.
Any updates on when we might have APFS/encryption? I'm moving from an old QNAP NAS that has encrypted volumes. I'm able to do encrypted Time Machine backups over SMB, but the device is pretty old and slow (and full). If I don't see a solution in the near term I'll have to look at an alternative solution like setting up another enclosure with non-RAID drives strictly for TM backups, something that isn't as robust and much more expensive.
Looks like this thread is pretty old, so maybe there's no solution in the pipeline? I really like the hardware and using a Mac mini has been great as far as integration into my network, but I really think it better to keep drives encrypted.
There is a bug in APFS we are waiting on Apple for. We can create APFS volumes and encrypt them, but they do not survive a restart.
This will be a feature in SoftRAID 6.
Any update on release time line for SoftRAID 6? Thanks.
No. Since you are interested in encryption, though, it is almost certain that 10.16 is going to be required for encrypted volumes, as we do not see the issue we are encountering being fixed in Catalina.
