Hi there,

Last night I go the dreaded failure message,"Raid 5 Degraded Failed". It is reporting that all 4 hard drives have I/O errors. Each drive has "I/O Errors 10" displayed so I ran the Validate command.

The validate command reported that "There were 0 RAID blocks which were updated. All parity data is now correct".

Additionally, the "Rebuild" option under Volume in the SoftRaid XT application is grayed out and I am not sure why.

See attached screenshots. I'm stumped as to how to resolve this?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

When multiple disks are out of sync the volume is marked "failed". The way to recover from this condition is the command "Recover failed disks".

Generally you should let the recommended rebuild/validate occur, but since you just did a validate, there is no need to do it again.

Looks like everything is OK!

Thanks for your reply. I am confused so how do I reset the error messages if you think everything is ok. The error messages still persist and I am getting a little paranoid. :)

Did you apply the command "recover failed disks'?

No I didn't apply the command as I had no idea what it did. So I have executed the Rebuild command and doing validation first then rebuild. Let's see what happens and will report back.

What that command does is clear all parity data and rebuild the volume, recreating all parity data from scratch.

If you elect "Not" to rebuild, then all parity data is assumed correct. We do not recommend this option, unless you very recently validated the volume. Its best to allow the rebuild to occur.

Thank you for all the help and advice. The rebuild has finished and no errors. Everything back to normal. I'm very happy !!!
