I have a 16TB ThunderBay 4 (4x4TB). I am looking at two options:

RAID 1+0 gives me 8TB.

Two RAID 1 pairs also gives me 8TB... two 4TB Volumes.

I am not very concerned about speed. Is there any reason the two RAID 1 groups would be more reliable? Seems like each method can handle the same number of failures. Somehow not striping the data seems more reliable.

Simpler is always more "reliable". If you do not need speed, or the larger volume capacity, then two mirror pairs is going to be slightly more reliable and easier to work with if anything goes wrong. Plus, a Mirror is easy because you can keep a third disk off site as an off line secondary disk.
