I have a 4TBx4 ThunderBay 4. About 20% of the time, when I copy a large (1GB) file from another hard drive to the ThunderBay 4 (configured as RAID 1+0), the file is not the same.
It passes verification so I am not sure what might be wrong.
Can you send us a SoftRAID technical support file so we can investigate?
Does this happen only with large files?
What type of files are you copying?
We do many extensive tests with (checksum validated) data transfers, so this would be incredibly abnormal.
I erased the RAID and ran a certify on it. 3 of the drives passed fine, but one failed. I got an RMA on that with OWC. When I purchased the original TB4, I also bought a spare 4TB drive already in the sled, so I swapped that in. The note that came with it said that it had already been certified, but I decided to certify it myself. Good thing, because that drive also failed.
So now I have 2 dead drives and my RAID system has never rally worked. How common are failed drives? I have 2 out of 5 fail in less than 30 days of use. Toshiba 4TB X300.
That is a clearly high failure rate. But possible.
Maybe you should try certifying the same disk in a different slot, just in case that slot is defective.
It turns out that Slot A is defective and the third replacement drive also failed. Unfortunately, they have no inventory to replace it with so I have to send it back for repair. Thus, the drive I bought on May 1st will not be usable and reliable until mid-late July.
SoftRAID seems to work well, I just wish I could say the same about my OWC drive.
Really disappointed as I am unable to work right now.
That makes sense given your symptoms. Sometimes hardware can be defective, sorry it happened to you.
SoftRAID helped you isolate this as quickly as possible.
Question, if a slot is bad, I assume the drives were tested in other slots?
Be careful if the slot is for instance some how shorting the drives out, that could explain so many defective drives.
Drives should be generally reliable, the fact you are getting so many disks bad, perhaps the slot is causing them to fail. Its a possibility.
All the failed drives were in Slot A. When I moved one of them to Slot B, it passed certification. I am grateful that SoftRIAD was really helpful in isolating this. I just wish it didn't take 7 hours to for each read or write pass.
Can you send me your RMA number to support@softraid.com? We can ask to prioritize the repair/exchange for you.
