Howdy.

re: using an external third disk in a RAID 1 for offsite rotation as mentioned in your FAQ:
https://softraid.com/pages/support/faq/faq_best_practices.html#create_3_disk_mirrors

What is the best practice if the RAID set is a boot volume?

Using a MacMini running OS X Server (10.11.x). The two internal drives and an external USB 3 drive are in a single RAID 1 set. This RAID set is the boot volume.

What is the best practice for disconnecting the external drive from the set in order to take the drive offsite? Just unplug it? Split Mirror achieves the end result, but, does not allow me to update that drive simply by reconnecting it when I bring it back in for updating.

Unplug it is the only practical way.

Do what you can from the following:
Shut down first
Close as many apps as possible before unplugging
Wait for a "quiet time" when possible
Close any "database" applications, unlplug, then resume it

By simply unplugging the drive any open files will have a state of open on the secondary disk. You have to decide what is best in your situation.

thanks!

Currently I'm running SoftRAID4 - in the process of upgrading to SoftRAID5.

I have mirrors with a third volume stored off-site - and I and set the third disk as a Read-Only Mirror volume. When I return a week later, I use the command in the Volume heading. The mirror volume rebuilds elegantly in an hour, and then I split the third disk off again and store the third disk off-site.

When I look in the SoftRAID5 volume heading, I __don't see__ a command.

Is the SoftRAID4 still available in SoftRAID5?

Yes, it has been incorporated into the Convert menu. When you select the Read Only Secondary disk, then select "Convert", an option to add it back to the original volume will be available.
