Hi,
I have eight 14 TB disks I'm turning into a RAID 1+0. Four disks are in ThunderBay enclosure 1, and their corresponding (secondary) disks are in enclosure 2.

If I want to gradually add another "secondary" disk (so that there are 3 disks in each mirror), can I do so one at a time or do I have to add 4 new drives all at once and rebuild them all simultaneously?

I only have 2 spare 14 TB drives (currently being certified) at the moment, so I would need to buy & certify 2 more to have a 3rd disk in each mirror.

Basically, can it look something like this, at least in the short term? I *think* the answer is yes, but, at this point and for the money I've spent, I'm starting to question my sanity.

Enclosure 1: A B C D
Enclosure 2: A B C D
Offsite disk: A B n/a n/a

Thanks for any clarification / expertise you can provide!

Because of how RAID 1+0 works, there is not an easy way to do what you want. Each disk is not "independent" as a RAID 1+0 is really a mirrored pair of 4 drive stripe volumes.

Only a standard mirror allows multiple secondary disks.

With SoftRAID 6, we hope to add more ability such as the ability to have another off site/on site RAID 1+0 as you are envisioning, which would rebuild when connected. Not sure if that will make 6.0, or wait until a later update.

Thanks for the reply. I'll just keep my fingers crossed I won't need the backup. But from what you wrote, it makes it sound like I wouldn't be able to "rebuild" if an individual disk in one of the existing mirror pairs failed? Or am I misunderstanding the point?

Of course you can rebuild a failed disk in a RAID 1+0!

On the same note, do not use RAID as backup.

Always have at leat 3 copies of your data, the source, a backup and a off site backup.

Data is fungible, very valuable and fragile!
