One of the disks in my mirror failed so I replaced it with a new disk of the same size. I tried to add the new secondary disk to the old mirror and I got an error saying there is no SoftRaid disks with enough free space to add. I initialized the new drive with Softraid but it still gives the same error. I tried removing the old secondary disk but that made no difference.

Did you initialize it with SoftRAID?
A common mistake is to create a volume on the new disk. Don't do that.
otherwise, check if the new disk is even slightly smaller than your primary disk.
