I am trying to set up a Raid 1 mirror on my mac mini running OSX 10.12.6

After days of trying I have finally managed to get both disks including the one that housed the recovery partition (which I don't need) initialised as a soft raid disk

There are 2 disks, one has a 750GB volume, the other is initialised but has no volume.

When I try to set up the mirror (right click, convert) I get the below error:

"Error Converting Volume.

You are trying to convert the startup volume "XXXX". Mac OSX prevents changes to disks which contain the startup volume. You must use a startup volume on a different disk if you wish to convert this volume."

Can you let me know how I can get this set up?

To change a partition map, or convert a disk, all volumes must be unmounted. this is a security measure in OS X.

So install OS X onto a thumbdrive, or external disk (same OS version, 10.12.x), startup from that, then you can convert. After that, you can resume using your internal as a mirror. As soon as you make it a mirror, restart, as it can rebuild in the background.
