Have a new WD My Book Duo with two 6 GB drives that I bought to use a mirrored RAID system. I'm a photographer and plan to use this as my on-site backup system. While I work on computers when needed, I'm not deeply versed in hard-drive mechanics. I've certified and initialized the drive. Now I want to make it RAID 1 system.
But I can't find so step-by-step instructions for how to do this. Not in SoftRAID's help menus, nor on this forum. I'm a bit baffled that this information isn't more readily available. Hoping someone here can help.
I tried to create volumes, hoping I could figure things out as I went, but softraid tells me I can't create a raid system with the drive because it's seeing it as a single drive, not two.
I have no idea how to fix this and find myself wishing for a simpler process. Any help is appreciated.
I'm on a Mac using El Cap.
You need to go to WD's site and find out if it is possible to set the drive as JBOD mode. This is not possible to do with OS X or SoftRAID.
Once you change the RAID mode of the enclosure to non RAID, then you can create a Mirror easily enough.
The videos we created really make it simple:
I am new and trying to set up a 250gb and 299gb ext HDD as RAID disks. I am being told the largest mount of data I have available on the disks is 18.6MB. I have converted these disks to RAID volumes. What the heck to I need to do to get these set up? The help system is less than intuitive.
I suspect what you have done so far is convert them to SoftRAID format, but that is not a RAID volume.
Try this:
copy all the data onto the 250GB volume.
Initialize the other disk.
"Convert" the remaining volume to a mirror.

Both disks are empty. I will try as you suggested. I assume the 250gb disk is NOT a mirror. What format should it be?
SoftRAID tells you the volume type in the volume tile. It probably says "non RAID".
BTW: Be careful to understand the difference between disks and volumes. The volumes are empty, meaning no data? then make it simple: initialize both disks with SoftRAID and create a mirror (RAID 1) volume.
No need to use convert.
I think it worked! I now have one new volume from 2 disks. When I mount it, I can read and write to it. A different paradigm. My first experience with RAID.
