Hello friends,
I'm currently using the full version of softraid to manage a 4 bay external enclosure set up in raid 0. Each of the 4 drives are 2TB for a total of 8Tb. This is working great for my needs speed wise but I know it has no redundancy.
SO, I also have a 16TB WD My Book Duo that is currently using the WB proprietary software to be run as a mirrored 8TB drive. My current idea is to set the WD My book as a time machine drive that backs up both my iMac and the external 4 drive array.
My 2 questions are:
-Are there any advantages to setting the WD to JOBD mode and letting softraid handle the raid functions vs using the WD software?
-Is time machine the best method for backing up the external 4-bay array to WD external?
Thanks in advance! I'm new to using raids in general as well as softraid.
ps: I'm running a 2018 iMac, Mojave 10.14.3 and softraid 5.7.3
What you have is a "hardware" RAID 0. The advantage of it is simplicity and it uses the normal Apple driver. The difference if you make a SoftRAID volume from it, is SoftRAID can tell the condition of the disks and warn you of impending failure, which cannot be done when the disks are in hardware RAID mode.
The hardware RAID mode might be slightly faster, its hard to tell, but they should be similar in performance.
Time Machine is the worst backup application for large amounts of data. Use Time Machine for your System disk. Use better solutions for large amounts of data.
Even simple cloning software like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, Chronosync, etc are superior, as they will make identical copies of your volume if the target is the same size as the source. they are all relatively inexpensive, simple to use (somewhat more complex if you schedule), and work in the background. You will have to decide which offers the best features for your needs.
Then there are many backup applications, which I am not an expert on the market.
For cloud (emergency) backup, use BackBlaze.
