Clearing Parity Errors after Drive Replacement

Hello:

I have Softraid 8.5 installed on M3Ultra Mac Studio operating under MacOS 15.6.  There are 4 4TB Western Digital Red drives installed ThunderBay 4 enclosure in a RAID 5 configuration.

Last week I got a drive predicted to fail error and the balance of the drives also had i/o errors.  While certifying the new drive, the array developed parity errors on all of the drives.  Upon certification, I replaced the predicted to fail drive and rebuilt the array.  After rebuilding the array, I had parity errors on the remaining 3 drives.  I have done the following to try and correct:

1) Validate the RAID 5 array.  I still have parity errors on the three drives.

2) Unmount the RAID array and validate on of the drives with parity errors.  This failed to clear the parity error on that drive.

3) Close SoftRAID, unmount the RAID 5 array and re-boot.  This failed to clear the parity errors.

I have attached a screen shot of the current state and attached a current troubleshooting report.

Can you help me clear the parity errors.

Don

Use the "recover failed disks" command on the volume. SoftRAID will ask you to validate, since it is a background task, go ahead and let it. this will update all parity data.

Hello:

That worked for little while.  Today when I came home I had an error on one disk. I attempted to clear to the error, but I was unable to clear them.  Next I attempted to validate the drive with i/o errors.  However, this process hung.  So I shut down SoftRAID and reopened.  Now, I have a missing disk error on the volume. I have attempted to create tech support report but this also hangs.  See attached.  How do I recover my volume?

The disk hung. Maybe failed. If you restart, does the drive come back? If not, it has failed. I am thinking even if it "comes back to life" treat it as a failed disk and replace it now.

I have rebooted the MacStudio operating under MacOS 15.6.  I also shutdown the Thunderbay 4.  This seems to have worked for the time being.

I have been a user of ThunderBay 4 and SoftRAID since early 2019.  The system has been basically issue free and I have had very little need to contact support or use this forum.  Since I have shown myself to be a responsible member of this forum, might I ask that the administrator remove the moderation hold.  It would be helpful, since I suspect that I may have ongoing issues and would prefer not have the moderator hold my post so that I can get more prompt help.

Thank you again for your support.
