Replaced Drive, Rebuild Failed - Quad or SSD?

Hello

Mac Studio 2023
MacOS Sequoia 15.0.1
SoftRaid v8.3 Driver v8.3
Mercury Elite Pro Quad w/4 Samsung QVO 860 2TB SSD as RAID5
Primary Use Case - Video editing work disk.

Just moved into a 2023 Mac Studio from 2020 5K iMac about a week ago.  There were no issues with the quad prior to this point, and for the past few days, I have not experienced any level of issue with the quad since it moved over to the Studio.

Tonight, I attempted to export a podcast video from my normal workflow (Something I had done from my previous iMac on a bi-weekly basis) During the export, one of the disks in the Quad had errors.  Please see attached log.

Since I keep an extra New-In-Box SSD on hand, I replaced the drive and added it to the volume.  A rebuild started immediately.  About 20% into the build, the new drive kicked the same error.  I did not "certify" the drive before doing the rebuild, so I am going through that process now, (Looks like it will take a day).   In the meanwhile, what are the chances that a new drive would have the same error in the same bay of the quad?

So, can this be an issue with the quad and not necessarily the drive?  Is there another way to test to see if the quad itself is having an issue?   Also what would a recovery look like in that scenario?

Please advise.

@allenat

If you backup, then swap drives, does the error follow the drive, or the slot?

Finished the certify on the drive, and that went through successfully.   It is only when I attempt to rebuild the volume do the issues crop up.   I am in the process of offloading the items I had on this drive, and I will swap around the drives to see if the error moves.

Either way, this is starting to feel like chasing a ghost.  Given I purchased this back in 2020, it may be time for me to bite the bullet and get the newer thunder bay setup.  I will let you know what happens.

Side question, I assume my soft raid license is assigned to my Mac and not to the drive bay - I should not need to add another license with the purchase of an additional drive - correct?

Thanks!

Keeps getting weirder - now two of the drives are not functioning.

It seems that the issue is "moving around" - which leaves me to believe that there is something wrong with the Elite Pro Quad.

For sake of transparency, the only "change" that occurred is when I was moving from my iMac 5K into my Mac Studio, I took the liberty of "dusting" my desk using a small electric blower that I have owned for some time.   The quad had gathered a ton of dust, so I decided to blow some air through to clean out the dust.   Turns out that this may have been the beginning of sorrows - never really bought into the whole "spinning the fan turns it into a generator" tale - but maybe there is some truth to it.    See the attached logs and screenshots - errors are popping up everywhere, and it even froze my Mac Studio twice.

I have since reset PRAM and SMC, and the freezes have not occurred, but when trying to delete and re-create the volume, the disks are throwing random read errors.

@allenat

Does seem like an enclosure issue. Get a Thunderbay next time, better reporting/monitoring than USB.

Your drives will pop right in, if you do not need extra capacity. However, your drives are at least 35,000 hours old, past their recommended date, so I would get new drives.
When you get an enclosure with drives you get a new license for 3 years of SoftRAID Premium. I would use that.
