How do I give permission for Softraid to read Smart status of drives? Do I need to install a driver and give security permissions?

Currently running 2x owc Mercury elite quad enclosures and other thunderbolt enclosures and no smart data is show for any drives.

I have the latest OS(Sequoia 15.1) and latest SoftRaid (8.3)

Thanks

We are waiting for MacOS to support SMART over USB, which it currently does not. There is a SMART-SAT driver, open source you can try to install. Or get DriveDx, it works for many USB enclosures.

If Apple officially supports USB SMART, it is a better solution. If we figured out a way to implement it (as DriveDx did), then there is little to no chance that we could get MacOS to support this, which would be a win for the entire Mac user base.

Hello, I'm new to this forum, I believe I might be having the same problem.  I have a windows 11 System PC.  I had created a raid 5 with 8 24TB Iron Wolf Pro Hard Drives.  I deleted the volume because I did not certify the drives.  Reading the Manual and looking at Youtube videos it was suggested to Certify the drives.  So I'm currently Certifying all 8 drives. It started out by saying it would take 19 days to finish certifying which was on Thursday, now today Friday, Nov. 15 it says it will take 8 Days to finish.  While I'm waiting for the certification to finish.  I see that each drive says, "Disk health couldn't be determined. The type of disk isn't supported"

Can anyone tell me if this message is because it is still certifying?

Thanks for your help.

this is not because of certification. Its something else, SMART may not be supported by the enclosure/bus the drives are connected with.

Run the Windows Diagnostic program with the drives connected.

You can download it here: https://download.owc.com/diagnostics/windows

See if you can attach it here, I am not sure, let me know.

Thanks for the reply.  I will certainly run the diagnostics for windows, but I will wait first to have the disk certification done.  As the days have gone by, I've been getting these messages that the disk couldn't be certified.  So I tried to restart it and it starts the process again.  I didn't give me any message if I wanted to resume the certification, but I noticed, that instead of going back to the beginning it gave me the impression that is just continuing the certification somewhere where it had stopped.  If you notice in the picture where I have all the 8 Hard drives listed, only two out of the eight have not stopped the certification process.  The other six I've had to restart the certification.

I understand now the frustration others have felt when this has happened to them, and it's kind of grueling process the hard drives have to be put through and the time it takes.

But on the other hand, it better to find out if the hard drives have any problems now, rather then to find out later, then have to go through the problem of having to rebuild an array or just outright losing data.

I've attached some of the error pictures I've taken along with the last count as to how long each drive has to go.  I hope this info can help anyone who might be having the same problem.  I'll let you know once I have all the drives certified, how long it took or if I encounter any other problems.

@stevenc

Were you able to get the Windows diagnostic file saved?

How are these disks connected to the computer? USB? Or Thunderbolt?

@softraid-support Good Afternoon,

My PC froze this morning and I had to reboot.  I used this opportunity to check for any windows updates before I turned off to check for updates again, since it could force the PC to reboot before the certification is complete.  I opened up Softraid and restarted the Certification again.  I did not get any indication if it wanted to resume the certification, but I notice that the time it takes is different from the first time I had started the Certification.  I also used this opportunity to run the OWC diagnostic but the forum did not allow me to attach it. Let me know how can I get this file to you.

Hope this info can help find information about this Smart Status not showing. All 8 disk that are certifying say, Disk Health couldn't be determined: The type of disk isn't supported.  I've also attached a screen shot as well.

Thanks for your help.

@stevenc

We do not understand this yet, we can upload, with normal user accounts, we are sure it is not "permissions".

Could it be the browser? I doubt that also, but worth a try.

Make sure your files are .sr_supt

Could there be a space in the end or something?

Hello,

I attached the OWC Diagnostics successful today. It's kind of funny, I didn't do anything different, but today it worked.

My PC hung again this morning.  I really don't know why, I have all applications closed and setting set to not shut down, updates on hold until Certification is complete.

I did notice that My PC started what is call a Lenovo smart Advantage Scan and before it completed it hung.  It's never done that before, so I had to reboot.

Upon reboot I made sure to disable this scan as well to make sure it doesn't conflict with the Certification Process.

I also attached the screen shot I just took indicating the time it has left to complete for each drive.  I do hope that the Certification picks up where it left off or close to it when the system hung.

Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,

Steven C.

@stevenc

We have a fix for this coming in the next SoftRAID for Windows update, which will be in the next couple weeks. Thanks for reporting it, its a bug in capturing SMART with certain large disks that we were not catching.

Good Morning,

That's great news.  I still going at it trying to them all 8 hard drives certified.  The system hung the other day again.  I've never had my system hang since until I started Certifying the hard drives. So I tried instead of just doing all 8, I did 4, but again this morning the system hung and I had to reboot.  2 of the 4 was so close to being complete.  So I just decided again today to move forward with all 8.

I believe in the Mac OS if the the systems hangs, crashes and you  have to reboot, when you start the certification process to complete it, is ask if you want to continue or something like that.  Is there an option for something like that in for Softraid used in Windows 11?  I ask, because I'm not getting any message asking me if I want to resume.  I just again get a estimate of how long it will last.  It's been defaulting to 4 days and some hours.

I read that in softraid, it normally takes a day for every 2 TB it goes over.  So for me, I should have been done today certifying the 8 24tb drives.

The drives were working great in the array I had made, but because it was recommended that the hard drives be certified before long term use, I delegated the array and began Certifying all 8 on Nov. 14th.

What would you suggest I do, if this week goes by and they are not certified?

Is there anyway to tell really how far in the certification process each drive is at, if we can not take the days it says it has left at face value?

Does the Softraid in Windows 11 give you a notice if you want to continue certifying, if you system hangs? (because I'm not getting it)

Because this certification has been going on for almost 2 weeks, what would your recommend?  Should I continue trying to certify or should I just create the array like I did and move on like all the Drives are good because none of them will certify?

I know I can use the Microsoft, Storage space option, but the reason I brought the Thunderbay 8 is because I found the benefits your Softraid software has a lot more safeguards and alerts, (via email) if something is about to happen to the array.

Also I saw a video, posted over 7 years ago there is a gentleman called Larry O'Connor who said Raid 6 was coming right away in August or September in Softraid 6 in 2017  and it never happened. I can't find it anywhere in the softraid instructions.  When will Raid 6 be available?

I've attached the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s30HNoIZUck

Sorry for all of these questions, but I just would like to know  because I am planning to get another 8 bay storage system and I would like it to be possibly another Thunderbay 8 or or higher.  Just want it to be user friendly.

Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,

Steven C.
