I just got an email from OWC stating that you shouldn't upgrade to MacOS 15.2 if you are using a thunderbolt 2 enclosure with an Apple Thunderbolt 2-to-3 adapter but the email is a bit confusing : does it apply only to the 2019 Mac Pro or to all Mac models (in my case a Mac Studio) ?
Its only the 3/2 Adapter on the Mac Pro 2019. No other models affected. Should be fixed in 15.3
Thank you for the quick reply : my old thunderbay 4 backup-dedicated unit is then going to stick around a little bit longer.
I want to make double-sure of this, as I emailed you directly twice with this question and received no reply.
Your email had two sections:
- A "kernel panic issue affecting 2019 Mac Pros running macOS 15 with Thunderbolt 3 enclosures" and the mail said this was resolved in 15.2.
- A "new kernel panic issue in macOS 15.2 when using Thunderbolt 2 enclosures connected via an Apple Thunderbolt 2-to-3 adapter," did not specify this was only in Mac Pros, said it was still unsolved, and said not to upgrade to 15.2.
As the owner of a Mini and an M3 Pro MBP both running 15.1 and driving a Thunderbay 4 TB2 enclosure with a 2/3 adapter, am I safe to upgrade or not?
Yes you are safe to upgrade. We have only had reports on the Mac Pro 2019, not on other M series computers. I think fixing one issue led to others, etc and eventually they will get sorted out, but for now the Mac Pro with TB2's should not have 15.3 installed.
I finally upgraded to macOS 15.2 and my old thunderbolt 2 enclosure is working fine on my M2 Ultra Mac Studio.
Any issues with iMac Pro 2017 models?
No issues reported. And I just ran through some tests, everything is fine with a Thunderbay 4 (TB2) and the iMac Pro.
