Hello. I work in video post production, where we often have to send large disk arrays to other companies etc. If I send a RAID5 volume (Sabrent enclosure) to a third party who doesn't have the actual SoftRAID app installed, I understand that the Mac OS has a driver onboard which would still allow them to read / write to it. But what happens if one of the disks fails? Will they be notified at all (beyond perhaps a red light on the array)? If they swap the failed disk would it rebuild?
If it is intel, it will mount, yes and it can rebuild. But the driver in MacOS cannot notify.
They could install the SoftRAID driver on M1 for a 14 day trial, BTW. And it is fully functional.
How long do they need the volume for? Are they part of your company, or vendors?
@softraid-support We're delivering finished a copy of finished video and footage to our clients. Chances are they won't be powering the unit for more than a few hours, if at all. I just wanted to make sure if anything failed in transit that they'd at least see a light on the enclosure and would be able to swap the drive if necessary. Sounds like that's the case as they are on Intel Macs. Thanks.
It will mount, but they would need to install the SoftRAID 14 day trial to manage the array. The bundled driver cannot alert the user to errors.
