Just finished a project where i used 4 x 6TB disks in a RAID 1+0 which amounted to 2 x 12TB mirrored disks. Now i would like to liberate 2 of the disks to use in a new RAID, while keeping a working copy of my old project.

But if i remove one set of my disks the two remaining will not mount.

Is this even possible? Removing a set of disks and keep the last set?

I´m using a Thunderbay 4 on an iMac with 4x6TB in a RAID 1+0

It should be possible, yes, but you need to remove the correct two disks. You will be left with a "stripe" volume, however, so this is not an optimal volume for important data.

Pick the two secondary disks to remove.

Does it have to be the two secondary disks?

I removed a pair of disks last night. It wouldn´t mount.
When i reinserted them and booted it up it came up as "degraded" and started "rebuilding". The blue icon on the top of my screen is also yellow. All disks lists as "no errors". Is there any risk to my disks?

Yes for two disks to be removed from a RAID 1+0, they must both be the secondary disks.

Your volume is rebuilding, then will be marked as in sync and perfectly fine. This did not damage the disks and once rebuilt, the volume will be fine.

If you ever want to check a volume's "parity" data, use SoftRAID to "validate volume" and it will make sure all the disks contain up to date data.
