In the soft raid application when it is launched, in the volumes panel an error message displays for about a second that says:
'Degraded - 4 missing disks' with a yellow warning icon.
It then disappears and all is OK, drives display as normal, no errors.
Is this just a quirk, or something else?

The SoftRAID GUI displays all disks as they respond, rather than wait until all the disks respond, which would appear very unresponsive to the user.
So this is perfectly normal, SoftRAID is reporting on each disk as it shows up. You are watching the list of disks update in real time.
