So at the WWDC keynote monday, Apple announced that the next version of macOS will use a new file system called Apple File System (AFS). Is it likely that this will require an update to SoftRAID for SoftRAID to work, or does SoftRAID not care about the file system? Given how RAID works, I would think the later, but I was thinking about installing the developer preview on one of my test machines, and wanted to check - no point in installing it if I *KNOW* there will be major issues, like being unable to access my SoftRAID volumes :)

SoftRAID has been working on APFS for quite a while. The new OS X beta changes some things, so we do not yet have a beta version available, but it should be soon, perhaps within the week.

We will post on the forum when we have a APFS beta available.

Are you planning to have an APFS-compatible version of SoftRaid ready to go when High Sierra is released, or will it come out later?

We plan on having a beta in about a week and hope to be ready for prime time when High Sierra is released.

Everything depends on how forthcoming Apple is during High Sierra beta with developers, we have to have a reliable product!

I'm unable to install macOS high sierra beta. The message is "unable to unmount volume for repair". I disconnected all externals and deleted OS server, and have ejected my softraid drives (I don't need them on a routine basis). I'm wondering if softraid lite 5.6.1 software might be the problem.

Has anyone successfully installed high sierra beta on a computer running softraid lite?

If not, is there an easy way to remove 5.6.1 from my computer and then later, when the new softraid lite becomes available, will I be able to re-connect my raid drives without losing anything?

There are two installation issues:
the 2017 products do not allow installing SoftRAID.
High Sierra should be able to install on other volumes, but this is a beta and Apple does not yet have the installer working. (That is an Apple issue)

You can clone to a SoftRAID volume and boot to High Sierra. APFS is not supported in SoftRAID, that will require a future beta release.

Alternatively, you can convert your volume to Apple format and install. I believe the High Sierra installer will install onto an Apple RAID volume now.

Is it possible to do a manual install of the driver so existing HFS+ drives can be accessed?

I do not know what you mean. Drivers are always installed into the system, not on disks.

If the driver is installed in the system, all attached SoftRAID disks/volumes will mount.

Can you clarify your question?

Sorry got the confusion. Is it possible to manually install the drivers on the High Sierra beta?

High Sierra works with the 5.6.1 driver, but this does not support APFS. Only standard Mac OS volumes.

Interesting you say it should work as on my system, using a Thunderbay 4, every time I power up the thunder bay I get a kernel panic and the computer reboots. My system drive is formatted with APFS which SoftRaid does complain about though. Its not an issue with thunderbolt connected drives as I have another thunderbolt connected drive which works perfectly.

Do you want me to start another thread with a full bug report?

There is a known issue with 2017 Mac hardware.

There should not be a problem with older machines.

Send a SoftRAID support file to support at softraid. We can look at the kernel panics and see if the solution we are working on for the High SIerra issue will resolve your problem also.

Many thanks for the info. I have submitted a bug report as suggested.

BTW my machine is not a 2017 model but a late 2013 Mac Pro.
