Simple question (I hope).
Confusing part: When I select a volume size (in my case 8TB) the log says it was creating a volume of 7.28 TB.
It appears as though the "Volume Size" selection works on factors of 1,000 (like external drives) whereas the TB reported by the log works on factors of 1024 (the "true" definition). I assume this because:
8,000,000,000,000 (8TB selection * 1,000,000,000,000)
divided by
1,099,511,627,776 (the true definition of a TB)
= 7.276 (Log reported a volume size of 7.28)
Correct? So if I ever get the volume to work, a 8TB Volume section should hold the entirety of an 8TB USB drive...
Thanks
There are two factors, one as you noted, TB is defined differently depending on circumstances.
The other is a small amount of each disk is required for special partitions, so you can never get the full capacity. Its about 150MB that is reserved.
On the other hand, you never want to fill a volume more than 90%, or you get the disks/volume slowing down, and Finder starts misbehaving.
That's good to know. My whole plan was to build volumes the same size as the backup USB drives so I can be sure to not have more data than can be backed up. If I have to leave 90% empty that plan is blown.
