Cannot create a mountable Volume in Sonoma release (APFS). Also encrypted APFS not offered as an option (as it is is for DU)

Macbook Pro 16" Retina XDR, 2024 M4 Pro internal 2TB storage, 36GB RAM, MacOS 15.6.1 Sequoia, running v8.0 SoftRAID software; Local RAID drives/enclosures: 4M2 OWC Enclosure with 6TB NMe, RAID4 Storage; two external OWC T3 enclosures (2.5TB online storage) populated with JBOD 6x500GB, EVO SSD, RAID 4 array disks/partitions; Local Backup: 2TB.

Having a big problem with SoftRAID 4 0r SoftRAID 5 creating volumes. Hope you can help ASAP. The volume (shown) will not mount to the desktop, although it says it is created!!!

Also, a RAID 4 volume creator does not show MAX SIZE correctly. RAID 5 (distributed parity) does show MAX SISE but still will not mount to the desktop. It is also not visible within Disk Utility.

@henry-in-florida

Please attach a SoftRAID tech support file. the volume should be both created and mountable, with Sonoma, the driver always loads.

Note: encryption with RAID 4/5 on HDD's is unacceptably slow. Until we work out a solution with Apple, we are not offering encryption, but you can erase an APFS volume as encrypted in Disk Utility. Just do not do this with HDDs on RAID 4/5.

@SoftRAID Support... Please look at my other post on this topic for the support files you asked for and a more complete resolution to the primary issue. I agree with your speed assessment for encrypted media, after my trial of it, BTW. https://forums.softraid.com/functionality-issues/softraid-7-6-1-wont-mount-newly-created-raid-4-or-raid-5-volume-after-erasure-to-the-desktop/#post-21324 . Will likely decrypt the data on the affected RAID drives, where speed is critical. The backup local volumes aren't so critical.

@henry-in-florida

Your encrypted options are:

change to a different RAID level, like RAID 10, RAID 0, etc.

Use encrypted DMG files to securely store confidential data. its somewhat limited but works.

Sorry for the lack of user guidance on erasing APFS. We are getting to that, probably in the next couple months.
