Is my RAID 5 array rebuilding or what???

Hi,

I am trying to rebuild a 32TB RAID 5 volume that is comprised of 4 x 8TB enterprise drives. I have the new parity disk installed and it checks ok, but seems to be stalled on the re-build. The message says “data and parity disk - out of sync - rebuilding” and I am seeing no movement on the progress graphic, no data moving on activity monitor, etc.

Is this working, how long will it take? The array has 6.36 on it out of 24TB available, about 404,000 files. Here is a screen shot of the current status:

There is no problem. You have optimized for Digital Photography which means that no rebuilding is taking place while you use your machine. Change the setting to Workstation to enable faster rebuilding.

Is there a summary of what happens (or not) with each optimization style? Is there any downside to changing optimization styles as our work changes.

FWIW, I was backing up my 10TB raid to the cloud - a multi-month project - and my rebuild ground too a halt because I had my optimization set to video. After reading this forum entry, I set it to Server and rebuild is rapidly moving towards completion.

You can read about optimization in the online help in SoftRAID.

There is no risk to changing optimization at any time, including during rebuilds.

You did the correct thing. If you want better local performance, you can set optimization to workstation, which will use 50% of disk I/O's for rebuilding, rather than maximizing rebuild at "100%".

Thanks for your quick response. The documentation says that changing the optimization changes the priority of the rebuild effort ... but it also says the stripe size changes. Since I am using my drive for video I want the optimal stripe size for video (longer), but I do need the disk, which is under constant access) to rebuild. I switched from video to server and will go back to video in a few hours when rebuild is complete. Will the stripe size end up as longer for video?

When you "change optimization", the ONLY thing changed is the rebuild priority.

Selecting an ptimization is helpful when creating RAID 0 volumes, as it guides your Stripe unit size selection.

This is a permanent setting, it can not be changed except by deleting the volume and recreating it.

A mirror volume does not have a Stripe Unit size, so nothing to worry about there. Optimization for video means that a rebuild will never interfere with video capture/editing, but when you are not using the system, it will begin to rebuild as fast as possible. (and halt again as soon as activity is detected)
