I'm actually having this same issue now, it used to not be a problem but I recently started editing pictures off a large SSD instead of directly from the Thunderbay, now it's sleeping and waking all the time it's really annoying. I hope you can find a way to disable this like you can with a Drobo.Β

@rsmith4321Β

Try using the third party app caffeine to keep the disks awake.

@softraid-support I would still really like these disks to stay asleep until they need to wake, like it used to be. 😞

@williamgΒ

I have a computer in the office, an M1 with 12.4 beta. Clean install.

An Apple RAID volume is the only thing attached. SoftRAID is not even installed.

Constantly powers cycles. Disabling power nap, sleep, etc, drives still wake constantly.

@softraid-support No luck in getting Apple to sort this out? It’s infuriating…

@softraid-support I will try that. The strange thing is I never had this issue with my M1 Mac Mini, only since migrating to the Mac Studio. I did a full restore of my previous settings so everything should be the same. I can't figure out why now the drives are constantly going to sleep. I thought it was because I changed my workflow slightly, but I've gone back to editing images directly on the Thunderbay, and from the time I start working on an image in Photoshop until saving it 5 minutes later the drives are asleep and take a while to wake back up to save the file. It's really strange, I wonder what could be different about the Mac Studio that causes the drives to sleep so quickly.

@rsmith4321Β

If you get stuck with this, try the application "Caffeine".

I still get the spin ups...any update on this? Or was there any software found that could cause this? E.g. CCC?Β

@nightjarΒ

macOS is causing the spin ups. It also happens with Apple RAID volumes.

@softraid-support Any chance you can keep up the pressure on Apple to address this? It's really putting me off MacOS, but I expect SoftRAID has more clout than us lowly end users...

@softraid-support Thank you for keeping on it. I only speak for myself - but I appreciate it. Would love nothing more than this to be sorted out...

Good question. i had the best feedback on Caffeine, the (still) free but older version. I am not sure about the paid app store version.

One comment about amphetamine was it flashed the disk icon on the desktop too much.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been using Amphetamine but it makes all 6 of my external volumes' icons flash every 15 seconds and it's annoying. I'll try Caffeine again. I'll happily use either if they help, and in the end if one or both of them make my icons flicker 4 times a minute but it keeps my Air from panicking, I'm fine with that.
