Thanks. Haven't tried Caffeine yet, will later today after work. Here's a new "Send To Apple" report. My Air restarted on its own again.

panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffe0016f3636c): DCPEXT DATA ABORT pc=0x0000000000094f44 Exception class=0x25 (Data Abort taken without a change in Exception level)

I don't know what this panic is, SoftRAID is not in the backtrace.

@softraid-support Finally some good news. I couldn't take it anymore so I broke down and purchased a Thunderbolt 3 Hub with everything but the kitchen sink, including a 1.4 DisplayPort. Switching from TB to DP solved just about all my issues. The display can sleep and wake up in seconds instead of minutes or not at all. I never have to unplug it to get it to reconnect. My drives no longer spin down. I can shut down my Air without it panicking. In fact, no panics at all in 24 hours. It's like I have a Mac again. I'm ecstatic.

I'm so happy about it that I can't even complain about one of my 3TB Toshiba SoftRAID drives from OWC failing in the wee hours this morning. No SMART alert. It just suddenly could not mount one of the disks shared by two volumes. I can't even initialize it. The light blinks when I ask it to, and that's about it. Ordered a replacement.

Thanks again for all your help trying to track down what was causing my panics and drive craziness. We ruled out the drives, cables, Thunderbays, everything. I think Thunderbolt displays just aren't ready for prime time, yet. Maybe software/firmware updates for Macs and displays will eventually help but I got tired of waiting around.

Wow, I have seen monitor issues, but did not suspect this strong an issue. thanks, I am requesting adding TB monitors to our testing.

Still getting a looooooooooooot of spinups. Any solution for this on the horizon? I'm seriously worried about my disks. Is amphetamin the official workaround as for now?

@nightjar

I get the most positive feedback from this:

I do not yet know if Ventura will fix this.

I couldn't take it anymore so I bought a late 2012 Mini for $65, plugged in both of my RAIDs and now have zero spinup issues, no third-party wake apps needed. I access it form M1 MBP via ethernet. Not ideal but it's working.

Installed caffein...not working still spins up multiple times every 3-5 minutes unless I actively use the drive or software does.

So your drives are constantly spinning "Up" now down? You may not be able to avoid this, as macOS may be indexing the drives, or doing who knows what, activating them.

I have replicated this with a 4 drive Apple RAID volume. Nothing we can do, it has to be addressed on Apple's end.

On my test system I put the machine to sleep, then every 45 minutes they wake up for a few minutes.

@softraid-support Oh yeah, we've been tracking this issue for more than a year now and it is totally Apple. It happened with my 2015 iMac on Monterey, and got 100x worse with my 14" M1 MacBook Pro. But on my $65 2012 Mac mini (plus $36 for 16GB ram and $55 for a 1TB SSD) that's my new media/torrent/Time Machine/CCC/Work server running Monterey 12.5 via Opencore Legacy Patcher has zero issues with my Thunderbays. I don't know why I didn't do this years ago!

@nightjar Have you tried Amphetamine along with the extra helper app that you can only get from the dev's website? Activate the Drive Alive feature. That helps a lot.

I know my drives are going to live waaaaay less than they otherwise would with this spinning up and down 10 trillion times a day. So frustrating... :(

i could live with 45 min....but on my end it's rather every 5-10 minute each individual drive is spun up (you can clearly hear it) and then after a little time down again.

gonna try amphetamine with the extra helper
