You can attach a SoftRAID tech support file, and I can look at it.

Its a frustrating issue. We lock the volume to protect user data from being damaged.

But I am also interested in any cases were you can copy a small file to the volume after you get this message, but before you restart.

also repeated Kernel panics 20 second after locked disk message comes up and always Soft Raid is referred to in the first line

I don't know if you posted a tech support file, but please post one.

Any time there is a kernel panic in the IO system, SoftRAID wants to be in the panic log. SoftRAID may not cause the panic, but may be involved in triggering it. This looks like a IO activity on a SoftRAID disk. After I see the support file, maybe I will see something. This is highly unusual to have this many volume locking events, I don't blame you for complaining about it repeatedly.

And if you uncheck "put drives to sleep", does the volume locking go away?

I don't think you answered, whether you can copy a small file to the volume when you get this error message? I could have missed it.

I also don't see how the crashes afterwards happen. There is something unusual here.

@softraid-support I have not tried copying a file when it's locked but given that Sync will stop working I assume it will not copy, I submitted a log before I attach one again

Put drive to sleep is disable it makes no difference

@steve223

The support file did not post. Can you try again? You are attaching it to the forum?

Because we do NOT want log files. We need SoftRAID Tech Support files.

Logs by them selves do not give any useful information. The tech support file has most everything needed to diagnose a problem.

Its in the same menu, generate file for technical support. that is the file that you need to attach. It will be accepted as valid to upload.

If you want to report this to Apple, here is what you would need to do:

run the System Diagnose command in terminal.

Wait until your volume locks.

Run teh System Diagnose again, ASAP from when you get the message.

If you restart, or connect/disconnect any disks in the meantime, delete the old System Diagnose, and create a new one.

What has to happen is for Apple to see that in the same startup session, disks changing their assigned BSD identifiers, which should never happen.

sudo sysdiagnose -f ~/Desktop/

this really is no annoying I would have never purchased your drives if I knew they don't properly work with Mac OSX.

Once the device is locked I can't copy anything to Drive.

Please put a disclaimer on your web site and product page and state the well-known issues with Mac OSX or get this fixed.

Otherwise, I really like your devices and price point but that is ridiculous

This is a kernel bug in macOS. We are locking the volume to protect you against data corruption.

Generally this happens coming out of sleep.

We have reported this to Apple. MacOS assigns a disk identifier number (BSD node) to each disk when connected. This cannot change without removing the disk. In a RAID volume, in particular, a changed disk identifier means that SoftRAID would be writing to the wrong disks.

You can emulate the problem by swapping disks during sleep, which is a no no, but SoftRAID will lock the volume to protect against data corruption.

Did you set your drives to not sleep in System Preferences/Energy?

We also see this more frequently with hubs and docks connected.

I do not know why you are seeing this so much. It is a rare event.

@softraid-support I know so your drives are currently not compatible with OS X due to a bug in OSX please state that on your web site.

I have a 2020 iMac and with only two Thunderbolt port I definitely have Hub's connected there is no way around it

If you have a hub, maybe that is the issue.

What brand and model of hubs? (and/or docks)

This is NOT a SoftRAID, or OWC issue. It is an Apple issue. Our hardware is compatible. We ship thousands of units a week, almost all have no issues. Reading a forum, it appears as if there are many issues, as all you read are users with problems, you dont see the tens of thousands with no issues.
