@steve223

If you sold your enclosures why are you posting issues updating the driver? I am confused.

I don't know whether you need help, or just want to vent. This forum is here to solve problems using SoftRAID.

Yes you had issues that ultimately led you to sell your enclosure. It is not productive to rehash that, unless you have a new issue.

And I just spent a couple hours with a user who could not get their Drobo driver loading under 11.4, so drivers are not exclusively a SoftRAID issue, these issues are global.

Big Sur?

I have a 2014 in use as a media server, but I am keeping it on Mojave.

@softraid-support yes mate Big Sure and latest updated, 11.4 just needed a second restart of mac and SoftRaid seems to be ok now.

As I mentioned I use Mac for over 20 years and it's sad to see it going down the drain. Catalina had big issues and BUT Big Sure has quite a few fundamental issues as well. Interesting to see how a company that valued usability and stability a lot to something which now put QA on yo the user and releases half-backed software.

@steve223

 I predict at the developers conference, Apple will be pushing more major new features, not a  "fix the darn bugs" release.

@softraid-support yep, they should put a rest cycle in and just fix bugs and speed up OS. Final Cut Pro you can use right-hand panel without a MagicMouse as the scroll bars don't appear without a magic mouse (system-wide prefs are set to always show scroll bars) could list many more issue.

@softraid-support: Welp, I'm back with some discouraging news.

  • Converting the volume format from SoftRAID to Apple does not keep disks from disconnecting when the M1 goes to sleep.
  • Now another volume, "Work Disk," a striped, two-disk SoftRAID volume, has disconnected and displayed the same error message, so the issue is no longer limited to the two Toshiba disks.
  • One of the disconnecting Toshiba disks has 0 data / open files on it, so this idea (pasted below) doesn't seem to apply:

macOS tries to suppress some of these eject messages, but if you leave a file open (like a word/text edit file) it increases the chances macOS will report this to you.

As a reminder: I had zero issues when the ThunderBay 8 was connected to my MacBook Pro running Mohave 10.14.6 and SoftRAID 5.8.4.

I now have this laptop back from Apple and was thinking of connecting the TB8 to test it on my old setup.

However, because I updated the TB8 via SoftRAID 6.0.5 on the M1, I'm guessing I might run into issues because my MacBook Pro is running SoftRAID 5.8.4—yes?

Next steps?

@cr7

You have essentially proven this is a hardware issue.Any docks, etc connected to the M1? (or just the Thunderbay and M1?)

Unfortunate.

Make sure your cables are tight, try different connections, etc.

@softraid-support: Nope, no docks. The TB8 (under warranty) is plugged into the M1 directly using a new Apple Thunderbolt 3 Pro cable. My monitor is plugged into the M1 using a TB adapter. I've already tried each port on the back of the TB8. I'll try another cable and reverse the TB ports on the M1.

Am I able to move the TB8 back to my MacBook Pro running SoftRAID 5.8.4, or does it now require 6.0.5? That might help in confirming where the problem is.

Also: Could you help me understand why the computer sleeping would trigger hardware issues? This would help my troubleshooting process. (Tks!)

For clarity: The disks disappear or lock after the M1 goes to sleep (despite the fact that I have "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" unchecked in Big Sur's preferences).

When the computer is awake, there are no problems.

@cr7

When a computer sleeps, there is still a connection to the disks. If that connection is interrupted, then you will get the disks ejected, or a disk renumbering warning from SoftRAID. Thunderbolt is very fast and designed to power down the drives instantly upon disconnection. If a chip resets (or crashes), the result is the same.

Had only intel/Apple designed the Thunderbolt chip with a delay before disconnection!

Yes you can move an array around, 5.x disks and 6.x disks have the same partition maps and can mount on either system.

I'm in the process of verifying that I can effectively use my OWC Mercury Elite Quad + Softraid to house my User(s) folders so I don't have to spend a bloody fortune on a new M1 Mini (haven't ordered yet). I have 2 SSD's striped for this and made the initial clone of the User(s) folder yesterday (6/12/21). When I woke my MBP up this morning I had this error about locking the volume and to reboot. I did and promptly started looking here for solutions. I've attached my support file in case you need more data on this. Not that it will help since you're saying it's an Apple issue.

Anyway... so I've disabled sleep and will monitor, but this sure as hell doesn't leave me with much confidence to do what I'm planning. :(

USB should not have the same issue as Thunderbolt here. Any chance the hardware was moved at all when the mac was asleep (enough to jostle a cable)? Or there was a power outage, etc? Or you turned off the enclosure to sleep? Just checking.

Is the Mercury direct connected to the Mac? (it appears to be)

Does this happen every time you leave it overnight? How many hubs do you have? It appears you have 2?

I have one USB hub plugged into one OWC TB3 dock. That dock is connected to one TB port on the Mac. The Mercury is plugged directly into another TB port on the MBP on the same side.

Definitely did not move anything. I just set this up in this configuration yesterday so it sat overnight once and happened the first time. As stated I’ve disabled sleep completely now and am monitoring.

And you are correct. I totally forgot the drive was just USB-C. Still happened though.

@ionblue

What if you plug the hub into the "high power" port on the dock? does that make any difference?
