Then this problem must be more complex. I succeeded and a couple users succeeded using the share in System Preferences.
Let me investigate further.
Same problem for me on my Mac Studio running SoftRaid 6.3 - even if I add the SoftRaid partition (Raid 5) to the Sharing window, my other Macs on the local network see it, but when I try to open the drive, it reports that "The Operation Can't Be Completed Because the Original Item (name of my SoftRaid Partition) can't be found." I haven't upgraded to Mac OS 12.6 yet. Is any one else having this problem? I'm pulling my hair out.
@softraid-support Turns out not to be a SoftRaid problem.
After using the Migration Assistant to move to a Mac Studio M1 Pro, the external drives, presented them as options on the network, but provided the following notification when attempting to access them, "The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “mydrivename” can’t be found." After a ton of searching, the ultimate fix was painfully simple
- Deselect (uncheck) the File Sharing checkbox under Settings > Sharing for both computers.
- Reboot both computers.
- Reselect (check) the File Sharing checkbox under Settings > Sharing for both computers.
Fixed and I'm back up and running. Hopefully this will help someone else
I will remember next time user has this issue and my solution does not work. uncheck/recheck. ;-)
Update: I installed 6.3 and had the same issue as previously but this time, turning off sharing, rebooting, turning on sharing and adding the share in the Sharing dialog windows under settings seems to have worked.
