Can I *temporarily* remove disc from RAID 1?

I have an OWC ThunderBay 4 for my MacBook Pro 15 Late 2019.

Currently using 2 of the 4 bays. Those 2 bays each hold a 12TB disc. Using softraid, I have this configured as a RAID 1 for duplicating important files.

I'm traveling for 15 days and need to access a ton of the data for video edits. I'd like to take the enclosure plus one disc with me, and leave the secondary disc at home, just in case of loss/theft/damage while I'm on the road.

Wondering (A) Can I simply remove the secondary drive and then reinstall it when I get home? (B) If so, if I were to save new content to the the primary drive, would the secondary drive when reinstalled "catch up" or fill in the gaps?

Thank you very much for any help. Much appreciated!

Its important you take the primary. Then when you return, the secondary can rebuild.

If you take the secondary, you will end up with two independent volumes.

So, if I have a three mirrored drive RAID 1, and I want to keep one drive off site, I should take one of the secondaries, correct? You'd only take the primary if you were expecting to make changes to it?

Exactly. If you remove a secondary, it will rebuild automatically.
If you even connect the secondary to another computer, it will split from the mirror.

I think you understand.
