Hi,
we're interested in your software but we have some question.
Our hardware configuration is a Mac Pro Server (Mid 2010) and plain to use it as network Time Machine server.
Current configuration is macOS Mojave with 4 x 2 TB hard disks.
We have two options:
– Solution 1
1x2TB for OS
RAID 5 3x2TB for Time Machine network storage (total 4 TB)
– Solution 2
RAID 1+0 4x2TB for Time Machine network storage (total 4 TB)
1x external FireWire 800 disk for OS
Which is the better solution, in your opinion?
Thanks.
Apple no longer supports RAID for startup disks.
Here is my recommendation:
SSD boot drive. Install it in the lower DVD tray area. This is SATA 1, limited to 250-300MB/s, but still very fast for your server. Will work great!
If you do not need the upper DVD any longer, you can use 2 SSD's and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone one to the other to a daily/weekly schedule.
RAID 1+0 using the internal trays for your Time Machine backup.
