I am running an iMacPro with Mojave 10.14.3 with a four-bay Akitio Thunder 2 QuadX connected via Thunderbolt, SoftRAID 5.7.5.
Bay was in RAID 1+0. I lost two drives simultaneously, drive 1 and drive 2. Drives 0 and 3 are still okay. Drive 3 is labelled "primary disk, mirror pair 1". Drive 0 is labeled "secondary disk mirror pair 1". This seems to indicate to me that I have one full copy of my data on these two. Is this right? I removed the two failed drives and replaced them (they were under warranty). In the "Volumes" column it shows:
Data * unmounted
RAID 1+0 * degraded * 2 missing disks * safeguard enabled
no errors.
It will not remove the missing disks. When I select "Remove Missing Disks" it gives me the "Do you really want to" screen. I click Remove, I give it my password, then the command seemingly completes, yet nothing changes.
It will not allow me to mount the volume. It starts and then simply doesn't do it with no error message.
The new disks have been inserted, verified, and initialized, yet the "Rebuild" command is still grayed out. I just want it to rebuild the RAID 1+0 array with the new disks, but I see no way of doing so. Any suggestions are welcome.
What do you mean by "two disks failed"?
A RAID 1+0 means that there is a stripe volume with both disks mirrored. This actually gives the most redundancy.
A Mirror pair is one side of the stripe, so you actually have the wrong set of disks to be able to mount your volume. (2 of 3 instances where two disks fail would enable you to keep working.)
Do either of the other two disks work, or are they just predicted to fail, or have errors?
Also note that a "rebuild" does not enable a volume to be mountable. If the volume cannot mount before you add a disk, it won't mount afterwards.
SoftRAID does not talk to the "file system", what it does is at a lower level.
I mean two disks failed in a single day. When I pulled them from the array and tried to analyze them separately, they would not even appear as a disk. The two good disks appeared fine. However, the array will not mount with just 2 disks.
Reconnect the two disks. Do they show up in the disk tile column in SoftRAID?
I reconnected the two disks. They did not show up in the disk tile column.
Connect ONLY those two disks. Do they spin up?
Are these all in the same enclosure? If you move these two drives to the "working" slots, do they show up?
It is odd to have two failures simultaneously. If they do not even spin up, then this may require professional data recovery services (DriveSavers) to recover your data.
