Validation Concern

Good Evening:

I have an 18tb volume (part of 6x4tb RAID 5 array with 3 total volumes).

Yesterday, I/O errors popped up on one of the disks and Time Machine would fail to complete on my "BKPvolume". I cleared the I/O counter and tried again. No I/O errors and it passes smart. That said, it is a repurposed disk from a home NAS that has 28000+ hrs of service, and other repurposed disks from the NAS have failed in service.

I have already purchased a new 4tb and it should be here Monday. In preparation I copied the volume that I was concerned (MEDIA - 1.4/18TB used) to another 8tb drive.

I am in the process of validating the volume - and less than a third of the way through, 230,000,000+ blocks have been updated.

While I know on a first validation of a multi-volume RAID 5 array some blocks may get updated, this seems like a lot.

TL,DR: should I be concerned about the data integrity of the volume?

The copied data (a block for block copy) is backed up and safe. (The other 2 volumes are 1tb time machines for MBP and Mini - - but I CCC they every three days so not concerned if they get nuked).

Probably this is the first time it has been validated?

SoftRAID's driver is clever, as it does not require a complete rebuild/validation before using the volume. So this is not surprising.

After this validate, future validations will not show any updated blocks, unless you are on flash media.

Correct, first validation.

Thank you.
