Hi folks. I made up a brand new spankin collection (not a RAID yet) of 4 x 4 TB drives. Then verified yesterday afternoon. She's still goin. I'm on pass 1 of 3. The documentation said somewhere about a "Why not take a weekend to verify?", and I'm not ⅓ the way through yet:

drive 1: current offset 1,053,000,000, time remaining: 699:34:02
drive 2: current offset 1,053,501,000, time remaining: 700:46:03
drive 3: current offset 1,053,817,000, time remaining: 701:13:47
drive 4: current offset 1,055,000,000, time remaining: 701:27:15

So 12 hours to go? That's what it said this morning at 8am. How is it that it's not even ⅓ done yet? Will this be done by the end of this weekend (3 days from now), because I need to move on with my work.

Truly confusing. There has to be a way of better estimating time like this.

Cheers

We just give a measurement prediction based on the drives current throughput.

Look in the disks column. Are your drives connected via USB2.0 protocol?

7:30 am, and it's down to 10 hours. Hehe.

Note that the drives are connected via USB2 protocol, which is limited to about 30MB/s.

If you connected them via USB 3, at least they could certify at full speed.

If USB 3 devices are connecting over a USB 3 bus, at USB 2 protocol, it can be a cable issue, Mac OS (sometimes connects to USB at the slower rate arbitrarily).

If you think they should be talking at USB 3, then restart and see what SoftRAID shows in the disks column. If USB 3, restart the certify and it will go much faster.

If it connects at USB 2 again, check your cables, etc. (and make sure your USB is actually USB 3)

My Mac Pro is old. It was in full use by me well before USB 3.x was even thought of. It's not the cable, it's the machine.

So given this rate, how long do you think this will take? Let's say it's 30 MB/s, what fraction is this of USB 3.x?

OK, it's 7:30pm (12 hours later) and it's dropped 1.5 hours. At this rate it drops 3 hours per day of verifying. So 2.5 more days.

This "time remaining" indicator is hugely misleading. I think you might want to rethink this algo.

USB 3.0 supports (real world) >300MB/s, which is 10 x faster than what you would get with USB 2.0.

There are inexpensive USB 3 cards for the Mac Pro, and 3.1gen 2 cards, also.

Drive performance varies widely. They also get slow near the end of the drive platters. So the only way to be "accurate" is test every single drive model available, which is not practical. We are just giving a relative estimate based on the current drive performance.

Its close enough, in our opinion.

The estimates were around 10-12 hours for over 3 days. I stopped the verification and it still hadn't finished the first pass. So that would mean an estimate of 10 hours when at best, would have been 9-10 days.
