I want to securely erase my RAID volume. I can't do it with Apple Disk Utility (which says it cannot unmount the volume). I can't find a way to do it within SoftRAID. Is there some other approach? Can I convert the RAID volume to JBOD and then erase each drive separately?

SoftRAID allows you to erase disks as effectively as Apple's options.
Your choices are:
zero disk - good enough for most purposes
certify disk, 2 passes - extremely strong erasure
cerfity disk 3 or more passes - each additional pass makes it more and more difficult for a forensic recovery.
