Hello,
Today i started up my Thunderbay 4 that's running a Raid 5 setup. And i got a message i needed to check my drives in Softraid.
The 4th drive gave a message that it had i/o issues and later it gave the message that 'data and parity disk - failed'. Do i need to panic?
I just had the setup for 4 months now, so i never would have thought it would give problems so fast.
Do i need to order a new disk right away or is it fixable with the disk that gave the message? I'm running 4 Seagate Exos x18 18tb drives.
I'm a total noob with this.
Save a SoftRAID tech support file (Utilities menu) and attach it.
Thanx for the reply
The drives are not connected, according to MacOS. Try reconnecting everything and restarting. If the drives are not in the left SoftRAID column, it is a hardware issue, cables or enclosure.
My bad.
Here is a new support file with the drives connected
First thing is validate the volume.
Did you certify these disks before putting them into use? (or did you get them bundled with a Thunderbay)?
I surely certified the disks. Took about 6 full days. Can validating the volume cause any harm to the data on it? I got very important files on there.
I can still see all the files now, but have no space to backup everything to a different location.
validate does not affect data, it just rebuilds the parity data.
interesting, I do not know what caused the IO errors, I see it in the log, but no permanent issues on the disks. Be prepared to replace this disk if you see further IO errors, normally the point of certify is to avoid this kind of problem.
Thanx so much! I will start the validating proces right away. Do you have any indication how long it will take? Not as long as certifying i hope.
@drico Probably a couple of days. Don't restart. You can use your computer in the meantime.
The proces just finished. But it still says it failed, while the pop up says All parity data is now correct
Please attach a SoftRAID tech support file, so I can confirm there were no errors during validate and tell you what to do.
I'm verifying the faulty disk now. Don't know if that is a problem for the tech file, but here it is.
When I started the verifying proces Softraid asked me to unmount the volume, but i didn't unmount it for the validating proces. Is it a problem that i didn't unmount the volume for the validating proces?
