I upgraded to Ventura 13.1.  Prior to upgrade I was having issue with drives spinning down randomly.  I remedied this by using an app called Amphetamine which keeps the drive alive by writing to them every 30 seconds.

After upgrade, random Kernel panics, drive completely disappears.  Anyone else having these experiences?  Any suggestions?

MBP M1 Max

Connected to a CalDigit TS4 dock (doesn't matter if drive is connected to dock or direct to machine)

Please save a panic log. At restart, "report to Apple", click "details. Copy/paste the text into a text edit file. "Make Plain text", then save.

Attach it here.

So since I posted, I haven't had a kernel panic but overnight my drive disappeared an unmounted again.  My machine does not go to sleep, only the display.  I wake it up and errors all over from Softraid saying the volume has disappeared.  Here is a tech report, maybe something will stick out to you.

also to note, i bought this enclosure "open box" from OWC.  So could the enclosure be the problem?  I assume they test before they resell.  But really that doesn't make sense as I don't recall any of these issues on Catalina.  Starting with Monterey its just been issues non-stop.

I have not tried that.  But the drive will power down while I am using my computer, randomly.  Up and down constantly until I restart.

Had a Kernel Panic, computer was left idle, display sleep, woke up, SoftRaid volume disappeared and lots of errors.  Turned off the enclosure and back on then Kernel Panic.  Here is the panic.  (it won't let me attach a txt file for whatever reason)

@chrispeden

Please do not paste large amounts of text, no one else can read the threads. Just attach a text edit file, where you "make plain text", as I did for you.

I do not see acknowledgement where you set Display Sleep to Never, and unchecked "put drives to sleep".

Does that help avoid the panic?

There is a panic involved with saving to disk, I can see that. Not what the cause is however.

I tried to attach a txt file on the kernel panic but it said not allowed...

Updates:

Put drives to sleep has always been never.

I set the Display Sleep to Never.  First night came back to machine no issues.  Last night same errors, turned display on, unlocked computer and SoftRaid errors all over the place, drive unmounted.  When I unlocked/logged in drive sounded like it was spinning up, looked in finder and it was there.  It would appear it went to sleep for some reason.  It doesn't always Kernel Panic, that is much more random.

Here is a tech support file, after unlocking the computer.  Is there any chance it can be the enclosure itself?  As I said I bought it open box from OWC, perhaps there is something not right with it?  Does the enclosure control sleep or is that all on the Mac side?

@chrispeden

You need to "Make plain text" or Text Edit saves the file as .rtf, regardless of what you name it.

I will take a look, its possible there is different firmware available, but it is not a user upgrade. I will ask, but this week still has a lot of vacations.

I did make it plain text.  So I dunno.

I will look for your reply about the enclosure.  Do the logs tell you anything else?

@chrispeden

Not really.
You did the "Make plain text" command and then attached? It always works when I convert users text blobs.

Another Panic.  Continue to have issues.  In fact it seems to be getting worse.

One thing I observed is I had a file copy going and I was going to leave it going overnight.  I have monitor sleep turned off so I powered off my monitor and immediately the drive went to sleep.

Another thing I wanted to ask about randomly during data transfers my array/enclosure will just pause, and only one disk like is blinking, I don't get any errors but the system kinda freezes and then after maybe 10-20 seconds all 4 lights start blinking again and the system becomes fully responsive.  It has done this for months and SoftRaid doesn't show any errors or anything so I never really worried about it.

Another DART panic. Can you also attach a SoftRAID tech support file?
