Validating is extremely slow

Hello there,

I've purchased Flex 8 last year and set it up as a single RAID 5 volume with 8x8TB HGST drives and it's been working fine since. However, whenever I try to Validate a RAID 5 volume, the speed is pretty extreme like shown in the screenshot (and the ETA gets longer as it progresses)...

I've tried many times with different time of the day (in case my system is using the RAID during certain time), and even have re-set a brand new volume just yesterday, with only 1TB of data in it.

Wondering if I'm missing anything here? Here are the details of my setup:

RAID 5 - 8x8TB HGST performance drives

Optimized for Digital Video

64k

System Specs:

Tried both Windows 10 Pro / 11 Pro

i7-12900KF

Asus TUF H670-Pro WiFi D4 with

ThunderboltEX4 add-on card

128GB DDR4 RAM

GeForce RTX 3090

Thank you.

Did you try setting optimization to workstation? How does that change rebuild time? It should make it much faster.

@softraid-support

Thanks for the suggestion!

While setting up as Workstation did help with the validating speed, the actual performance has been impacted I'm afraid. The Sequential Reading used to be up to 2000MB/s, and now it's just 1400MB/s.

Is that normal? I do mostly editing work.

Thanks again!

this is exactly why we have this optimization. So when you are working the rebuild does not affect performance. You can change it back to Digital Video, any time,then change it back, when not working. In Digital Video optimization, no rebuilds occur if you are working, so as not to affect performance, but if you are idle for a few minutes, then it will rebuild again. this is exactly for the reason you note.

@softraid-support Gotcha, that makes sense. Although where can I change the optimization settings though? The windows version of SoftRaid Pro only gives me the following options:

Thanks!

@softraid-support I don't currently. Should I proceed with opening a case?

@hys17

Yes please do. I don't have a simple answer for you.

Please run the Windows Diagnostic program. With the drive array/set connected, please download and run: https://download.owc.com/diagnostics/windows

This should generate a .ZIP file - Have that ready for your tech when you get a response.
