Hi everyone,
I am trying to understand whether the level of performance I am getting from Softraid for Windows is poor or normal.
I have an OWC Thunderbay 4 with four brand new WD Red Pro 8TB disks, in RAID 5 configuration and optimised for Windows during their setup. On my (M1 MacBook Air) Mac they deliver roughly 500MB/sec performance in read and write.
But on my Windows 11 PC (with a Thunderbolt 3 add in card), while they also deliver roughly 500MB/sec read performance, the write performance is a little over 200MB/sec, is quite variable, and often slows to below 200MB/sec when transferring large files from my very fast SSD to the Thunderbay.
I do have a support ticket running and the latest communication was that this, given my Windows version, PCÂ configuration, motherboard, add in card, cabling etc, was 'normal', implying that no further investigation was needed.
Can anyone else in the forum running Windows please chip in and let me know if this write performance is indeed normal, from your experience?
What write performance are you getting using Softraid for Windows (assuming you are using a Thunderbay 4, for Thunderbolt 2 or 3).
To put in another way, if others are getting 400MB/sec or better write speeds using Softraid for Windows, then my write speeds are possibly not normal.
Finally, for those using Softraid for Windows and also for Mac, do you find the performance is roughly similar no matter which computer your OWC enclosure is connected to?

Thanks,
Steve.
PS: Some testing screen shots are shown below.Â

This is an area we have been actively working on.While performance depends on the computer and configurations, its obvious performance is not what it could be for Windows environments.
The next update for SoftRAID will see increasing performance on the Windows side. Our goal is to increase performance across the board, and this next release is a good step forward. Expect it in the next month or so, we are testing in beta currently.
We believe we can enhance performance even further in the future.
Thanks for the heads up. That's good to know i.e. the improvement part 😀 .
I have been considering spending $$$ on a Mac Studio to get better Softraid performance, but if you believe that better Windows write performance is in the pipeline, as it were, I will stick with my PC.
Cheers.
Hi,
Regarding the issue I raised above, I lodged a tech support case with OWC on 21st August US time (Case number 01985172), sending the data generated by your diagnostic tool as a way of assisting the OWC tech support team.
Other than the autoresponder I have not had a response yet. Perhaps there is nothing that can be done until the new version is out of Beta?
Thanks,
Steve.
There is not anything you can do, but you should have had a response. If I can find the case, I will make sure someone responds.
@softraid-support "The next update for SoftRAID will see increasing performance on the Windows side."
Please let me know when this update is implemented. In 2019 I bought a new Thunderbay 6 for $720 and its essentially been a door stop since then due to poor windows performance (i decided to use other solutions).
It should be the same time as SoftRAID 7.6 for Mac is released. I am not sure the Windows version. But it should be in about 2 weeks.
Dumb question here. Why don't your installers match the naming schemes of 7.6 etc. If softraid is up to version 7.x why is the current instaler called 3.0.14.16?
This way users can see if current version has been updated without asking you and wasting your time.
Looking forward to giving softraid another shot.
Thank you :)
SoftRAId for MacOS is nearly 30 years old. SoftRAID for windows does not yet have all the features of the mac version. When we reach feature parity, or close to it, we will be numbering them the same. (maybe within a year, but really hard to tell) We cannot do this yet, it would not make sense. in the meantime, sorry if the numbers are different. we show the latest release versions on the SoftRAID web pages.
