No it is only an hour or so. The clean install is a second macOS volume inside your current volume, not affecting your main volume at all. This is just for testing. afterwards, you just delete the second volume should you choose.

APFS does not work like HFS. you can have volumes inside of volumes (actually called containers in APFS-speak), sharing the same space.

Yes, but this issue only occurs once every day or two. So there is not much that I can do to test a clean install, because I'd need everything on it and configured.

BTW the drive locked issue just happened now after wakeup from sleep, including the Softraid message about volume locked and needs to be restarted. But I was able to click through the various messages (4 or 5) until they were gone. Then I checked the finder and the Thunderbay was correctly mounted. I launched Softraid and all is there. All without rebooting. Is this because of a change in Softraid? Before I was forced to reboot. Am I still safe continue withouit rebooting, as nothing appears to be wrong?

PS - I am getting notification when this happens that the Thunderbay was not ejected properly when I get the Softraid drive locked message. This is also new. Is this a clue?

We just figured out this may be caused by a MacOS bug. We need to investigate. that would be great news. We may be able to work around it, or ignore the events that cause it.

You can not worry for now.

If you get the volume locked, but you can write to the volume, then I believe all is OK. if it is locked, restart.

its early in this investigation, so i have no answers yet.

Well, that would be amazing news. I am now on 7.0.1 with MacOS 12.6. The locked disk issue is now happening multiple times per day. I either get the situation where I can write to the drive, or I get a total freeze with a kernel panic while clicking through the locked drive warnings. Here is the latest panic report:

Please attach panic logs as attachments, which you can do if you copy into text edit and "make plain text". that way the forums are easier to read by others.

Can you also attach a fresh SoftRAID tech support file? We may need to report this to Apple, as this should be fixed with 7.0.1.

Thank you. I have a theory that this is related to Time machine. I was able to replicate the panic in our office by making the RAID 5 volume a Time Machine volume.

Your support file supports our theory.

That is very interesting, because I made an extra TimeMachine drive with extra space I had on one of the RAID drives after I replaced the drive. I recently started thinking about whether this drive is causing some confusion. So yesterday I ejected the TimeMachine drive and today after the system slept there was no disk lockup. It's still early to tell, but it appears you are onto something!

It just happened again, but something is strange. Even though the TimeMachine volume had been ejected, the error from SoftRAID said that the TimeMachine volume disappeared. It also said that the Thunderbay volume disappeared. In the finder, the only message is that the ThunderBay was not ejected properly. This tells me that SoftRAID expected the TimeMachine volume to exist while MacOS did not. I am able to continue working after clicking through OK on the menus. But...SoftRAID will not launch properly. When I launch it, I see no disks and all the options in the menu are greyed out. But I can confirm that the Thunderbay is fully usable as I am opening files from it. Is there a way to reset SoftRAID when this happens?

I would attach the SoftRAID error report, but the option to do so is greyed out.

Update, I killed/relaunched the SoftRAID Monitor process. Now I am getting the disks in SoftRAID and options are no longer greyed out. Here is the error report.

@mountaincat

Apple never actually unmounts Time Machine. Somehow, it holds onto the volume, despite it being mounted.

So then, should I wait for a solution from you? Any idea of when that will be? Or just delete the TimeMachine volume? I like the space but if it solves my issue I'll trade the use of it for stability.

@mountaincat

It is going to be a MacOS fix. Perhaps 13.2.

I need a solution in the meantime. The issue is happening all day now, driving me crazy. Is there any way to decommission the TimeMachine drive temporarily without losing its contents? I don't see a way to do that in SoftRAID. Also, each time this happens I have to click through 5 or so warnings windows to keep working, and then I have to kill and relaunch the SoftRAID Manager process or all of my drives are blank in SoftRAID. It's quite scary to work like this, not confidence inspiring when dealing with work. Thanks.
