I've been getting frequent pop-up notifications like this on my RAID 10—sometimes when waking from sleep, other times seemingly out-of-nowhere while working (not even writing/reading to/from it), like just before writing this post. Click ok in the dialogue box, then open SoftRAID, which sometimes shows 1 disk degraded, some times 2 disks degraded. Sometimes it warns, "Disk for SoftRAID Volume Disappeared" and other times, "SoftRAID Mirror Volume Out-Of-Sync." Only with my Thunderbay6 RAID 10 setup.

All rebuilds have been successful. However, on my other 2 Thunderbay4 RAID 10 setups, I never experienced this issue, let alone frequency (maybe once or twice over the past ~5 years). These interruptions are not ideal, obviously, but I'm more concerned about longevity/safety. I'd like to find out why my new Thunderbay6 RAID 10 setup is acting this way.

  • SoftRAID 7.6.1 installed on 2 different machines
    - Main machine: M1 Max MBP 14" running macOS Ventura, fresh install (updated from Monterey less than 2 weeks ago)
    - Secondary: 2019 Intel MBP 16" running macOS Monterey, fresh install
    - Frequent warnings/rebuilds on both machines
  • Seems to only affect my Thunderbay6 (open box via MacSales) with brand new (purchased Winter 2023) NAS drives, certified (3 x Toshiba N300 Pro 16TB, 3 x Seagate Ironwolf Pro 16TB)
    - As mentioned, my other 2 Thunderbay4 RAID 10 setups haven't run into this issue (both mount and operate as expected, no interruptions, etc.)

List of dates that issues have come up with my Thunderbay6 setup (just the ones I remembered to screenshot/document):

M1 Max MBP14, Ventura:
12/31/23, "Mirror Volume Out-of-Sync" > Rebuild Complete
1/8/24, "Disk for SoftRAID Volume Disappeared" (2 missing/degraded disks)
1/12/24, "Disk for SoftRAID Volume Disappeared" (1 missing/degraded disk)

2019 MBP16, Monterey:
1/8/24 (2 separate times this day), "Volume Out-of-Sync" > Rebuild Complete
1/9/24 @ 11:18AM: "SoftRAID has detected a problem…"
1/9/24 @ 4:08PM: "Mirror Volume Out-of-Sync"

**Report attached (screenshots available if helpful)

Appreciate any help with this, thank you!

Can you check if these two disks, are next to each other in the enclosure? What slots are they in. Use SoftRAID's blink disk light feature. You can also give your disks "disk labels" in SoftRAID to track them.

SoftRAID ID:(in the disk tiles)

0A12050DD45DD100

0A12050DD41A7680

this may help determine if this is an enclosure issue.

@b_frank

this means this is likely NOT an enclosure failure, as they are on different PCI lanes.

Does this only happen waking from a longer sleep?

If you disable sleep settings (sleep set to 0, uncheck put drives to sleep in screen lock and set other display settings to never) does that avoid this?

@softraid-support This also happened while in the middle of using my computers—no sleep, with an app named Amphetamine active to keep my machine awake. I just adjusted those setting in my System Settings on my machine running macOS Ventura, and will do the same for the Monterey machine. I'll see how things go and report back.

@b_frank

Good!

More data is helpful.

Its possible this is an enclosure issue, but the symprtoms do not align with that very well.
