Can you post estimated or average Certify times (as well as Verify and Initialize) for different types of hard drive?

(Maybe add to the manual or top of the forum)

I have an OWC ThunderBay 4 RAID 5 Edition with 4x 8TB Toshiba MG05A drives.
If I stop the certifying process, does it damage the drives? If I need to use them?

And, can I formate a raid, use for a short time, and start the certify process again?

Thank you,

Ronen

A quick way to do this is a 3 pass certify is a write, then a read pass. so 6X the drive capacity.
a 1TB drive means 6TB of data is read/written.
The unknown is what can the drive sustain on reads and writes.
at 150MB/s, a 1TB drive can be certified in 1/2 a day.

The problem is disks change behavior dramatically during the certify process. Many modern drives use cheaper "SMR" recording, which causes write performance to drop by 1/2 to 2/3 during the write process. SoftRAID just measures the current speed vs amount remaining to estimate a time, which is why it varies a lot during a certify.

What you see are the hours remaining, guessing at 74. But it will take longer, depending on the disks. I do not know if those Toshiba's have SMR or not.

Here is a table of SMR drives I found on the web:
(formatting does not carry over, but you should be able to figure it out)
