SMART Status only during Boot?

I am running two Thunderbay 4s, each with four 8TB drives.

I thought I read somewhere that SMART data is only read during boot up?

Is this true? Even with enable SMART on usb disks (not sure if that option applies to Thunderbay connected via Thunderbolt 3, or it just means a regular external drive connected VIA USB).

If it is true that SMART data is only read during boot up, should I consider creating a regular re-boot routine? Any recommendations as to how often?

The computer that I have my Thunderbays connected to is a file server and time machine backup destination for the whole house, so I generally don't re-boot it very often.

SoftRAID reads SMART at various times:

The driver checks after a restart and every 24 hours
The application checks SMART every time you launch it.

USB is tricky under Catalina. Mac OS blocks SMART drivers from loading, if ANY USB drive is connected at startup, for the entire boot cycle. You can see if SMART is available on a USB drive by seeing if any data is available, or just a - under SMART and Power on hours in SoftRAID.
Note: On many SSD's SoftRAID is unable to read these parameters.

So not to worry, SoftRAID is taking care of you on this.
