certify vs validate

Hi, I only started certifying my newly purchased hard drives recently, so I have six older hard drives that I put into use without running certification passes. I did validate all my drives recently, and everything is ok with zero errors.

Just wondering, is it worth certifying the older disks (copying data off the disk and running the certify passes).

I wasn't sure if perhaps certification would catch errors that would have been missed with a validation pass.

Thanks so much

A validation only "reads" data. (actually I believe you mean verify disk)

This is the same essential test that most utilities perform, "can you read the data?", despite what it is called.

A certify is a rigorous test, of writing a complex random pattern, then reading it back. this tests the disk system for reliability far more than a simple read.

the best thing a certify does is break in a new drive so you know it is good before using it. With older disks, a certify is useful if you see any symptoms, or if you just want to be sure it is still solid. Ofttimes a drive that appears good will show failure symptoms when certified (reallocated sectors), in which case you can retire them.
