Error initializing USB disks

I'm trying to set up a RAID 1 of 2 Seagate BackupPlus USB 5TB drives on my Late 2015 iMac running Catalina 15.5. I get an error popup when I try to Initialize both of the drives. The drives are new and have worked fine when used separately.

I've tried this with the drives both mounted and unmounted. I've erased the drives and given them new volume names. And still get this error (see screenshot):

SoftRAID Error

Ann error occurred initializing a disk. This disk is currently being used by another application. Please quit all other applications and try again.

Disk with error: disk5, USB3 bus 0, ID 4, 5 TB

What could the "another application" be for an unmounted disk?

[If you need to vent personal frustration about using "cheap" USB drives with RAID, might I point out that the last 2 letters stand for "Inexpensive Disks"]

I have only been in Catalina hell for a while but it is disappointing to say the least.

Thanks, Joe

Actually the phrase was inexpensive in the original Berkeley paper, but now considered to be "independent" disks.
;-)

The problem is the volumes on the disks are probably Windows formatted. Manually unmount them first, and try again.
