I finally got sick of the messages on my OWC thunderbay mini and opted to get a couple of new 500GB 2.5" drives to replace the one giving 'disk failure predicted' errors. I replaced the drive and it seemed fine, the RAID (5) rebuilt etc. Then I had to reboot for an unrelated reason and then SR reports that the new drive also is 'disk failure predicted'. Thinking that it might have been a dud drive (Seagate from Ebay, in new packaging), I put in the other drive. Again, RAID rebuilt and things seem fine. But then reboot, same problem. This particular volume isn't mission critical so at the moment I've switched off SMART status reporting on the drive in question. Has anyone else had this problem please? I'm using Mojave 10.14.6 on trashcan MacPro, was running SR XT 5.8.3 and 5.8.4

This data comes from the drive. Are the errors "reallocated sectors?"

Send a sample line from the SoftRAID Log (not the whole log, just the entry where the predicted failure is described, and we can tell you if it is from a unknown "disk error", or a genuine failure condition, where the disk is going to fail soon. (Remember this is a statistical determination, a disk can have a reallocated sector and live a long life, just like high blood pressure)

"failed reallocations". So I would enable SMART monitor again and send you a log?

This is very likely a failing disk. You can try "certify disk" to see if that resuscitates it, but failed reallocations indicates the drive cannot reallocate bad sectors. I would replace it. Since it is new, consider it Dead on Arrival and insist on a new replacement, not a refurbished drive.

Note: this is why new disks should be certified, conditions like this are discovered when the disk is new, rather than after months of use.
