I recently purchased 2x Thunderblade 4TB drives to use a data/file backup for my Mac Studio. I'd like to use 1 as my primary and the 2nd as my mirrored backup, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. I created the volumes on both externals and setup them up for RAID 1, where do I go from here? Sorry for the newb question, but I searched all day in the forum and can't figure out what to do next. Thanks
PS. I'm not super computer literate, but I do know enough to get in trouble and not enough to figure out how to make it better.
What you are thinking of is RAID 1+0. Which would be an 8 drive volume.
However, I think superior in your workflow, may be two RAID 0 volumes, then use a synch app like Carbon Copy Cloner to run to a schedule (nightly) to clone/copy/mirror the two volumes.
You can even keep the copy "off line" most of the time, then connect it at night only.
this will not give you real time mirroring of your data, however. but it does protect against other issues. (like data/volume corruption, etc.)
Its your choice which works better for you.
So I want to go the RAID 1+0 route, I deleted the the old volumes, created 2 new volumes, 1 for each enclosure, what's next
No, delete both volumes. Create ONE new RAID volume, select 1+0
Ok, I tried creating 1 new volume with all 8 disks, but since it's 2 devices it says I need to upgrade to Pro from XT, or did I do something wrong?
@matthones
Here use this beta to create the volume. We are removing this restriction in SoftRAID 8.
Softraid.com/sr_beta
the SoftRAID driver is a release version, so the "beta" functionality is in the Application, so you do not need to worry about this being beta quality.
Thank you, up and running now.
