Sorry if this is obvious but I am in the process of migrating from a Drobo to a Thunderbay 8.  I am just completing the certification of the first  5 16Tb disks and would like to set up a RAID 5 volume with them and start moving data.  Later, I want to add a further 3 12 tb drives and have them as a separate volume.  I am not looking to increase the size of the initial volume as you could with a Drobo.

Is this possible or do I have to add all the drives at once?

Thanks

Each volume is independent, and SoftRAID does not care how they are connected (as long as direclty, not "ethernet")

So yes you can do what you are requesting, very easily. Its no different than adding another enclosure.

Great, I was hoping that was the answer.  Thanks for the quick feedback.

In my Thunderbay 8 DAS, I have a five disk RAID 5 volume for general storage, a two disk mirrored volume for Time Machine backups, and a single drive that is used for the Mac caching service.  These volumes were configured at different times so I can attest that you can do what you want to do with SoftRAID.
