Hello,

I am currently going through a rebuilding process on a RAID 5 configuration and am concerned about how long the process is taking. I noticed a drive was degraded about a month ago (as of October 1, 2024). I ordered a new enterprise Toshiba 16TB HD promptly after noticing. The new drive arrived on September 24th. The RAID has been rebuilding since the 25th. It has been approximately seven days. Is this duration normal? For context, I have attached a photo of my SoftRAID application and information below on the size/types of drives in the system.

Thank you for reading and I appreciate any insight.

Have a good rest of your day!

Total size of RAID -> 112TB

Total amount of drives in raid -> 8

Size of drives - 16TB

Type of Drives -> TOSHIBA MG08ACA16TE

OS -> macOS Sonoma 14.5

That is too long.

1. Is the volume mounted? Rebuilds require a mounted (healthy) volume

2.Is there a progress bar on the volume tile? Does it have "hours to completion"? Do you see any IO's progressing on the volume?

3. What about optimization, make sure the volume is set to workstation or server for faster rebuilding.

SoftRAID tech support files are preferred over images, you may not know what to capture, images are too static.

Thank you for your response!

1. The volume is not mounted. There is blue text indicating that the RAID is waiting to mount. When I right-click on the raid there is no option to mount, only to unmount.

2. There is no indication of hours to completion or bar on the volume title. IOs are being processed with no errors. The RAID is read-only.

3. The volume optimization is set to server.

True! Would attaching a SoftRAID report help?

Thank you.

Sure attach a support file.

If the volume cannot mount, it canot rebuild. We designed this to prevent damage to data in a serious directory corruption scenario.

When was the last time the volume mounted?

Awesome thank you. The support file is attached below. I am uncertain as to when the drive last mounted. I want to say that it has not mounted since I attached the replacement drive but, I am not confident in that statement. Since I wrote this original post I have removed the replacement drive and have started validating the RAID. Is this the correct step to take in the interim? The volume mounts without the replacement drive. Sorry, I forgot to mention, I did not certify the replacement drive before I initialized it. Could this be why the rebuild was taking so long?

I appreciate your help.

@thfritzmann

Validating is the right step, if it mounts without the new drive.

After complete, (make sure your backups are up to date), then do it this way:

Pull out all the drives 1 inch. (just enough to unseat them)

insert only the new disk.

Initialize the disk.

Push all the disks in, and "add disk" again.

Incredible.

There are about five hours left to validate the volume. I will update once validation is complete and the new disk is initialized.

Thank you for your help!

Validation has been completed and I followed the steps in the post above.
I initialized the new drive and the volume is rebuilding. However, there is no bar to the left of the volume and no indication of when rebuilding will be complete. A hazard sign and red text declare the volume degraded. Is there anything that I am missing here?
Please advise. Thank you.

Attached is a new support file. I might be misunderstanding what you mean by the volume being mounted. The volume is visible in finder and has no option to mount, only to unmount, so I assume it is mounted. However, the raid is read-only. Does this mean that the volume is mounted? Sorry for the confusion.
