Hi to all (and Happy new year to all)
Meanwhile I certify my 4 x 10 Tb HDD in my Thunderbay 4 TB3 from MacBook Pro 16 with Catalina OS, I have a doubt when I create the RAID 5 volumes that I need ...

I explain what I want to do:
(I am a photographer and I make some videos and graphic design, all under Adobe applications generally):

I have Thunderbay 4 Thunderbolt 3 with 4 x HDD 10 TB Toshiba Enterprise (MG06ACA10TE) = 40 Tb storage which in RAID5 really is 30 Tb real storage.

I want to create 3 RAID5 volumes

Volume 1: 6 Tb for photos and video
Volume 2: 8 Tb Work's finish and storage
Volume 3: 14 Tb for Time Machine

OS Catalina has a new file system (APFS Apple file System) but in the SoftRAID support videos, I have seen that when creating a RAID volume, the recommended File System is HFS + (with Enable Journaling).

When I finish certifying my hard drives and create new RAID5 volumes, which file system is recommended for my RAID5 volumens? HFS + or APFS.
(perhaps APFS it's no possible under SoftRAID, I can't see this for the moment)

Thanks in advance!

You want HFS for two reasons:
1. APFS volumes on HDD's are 50% slower than HFS
2. APFS volumes can still get damaged and there are still no repair tools, so backups need to be extra solid.

SoftRAID 6 will support APFS, but we are trying to get a change into OS X that will fix this performance issue on rotating media.

Make sure you have a good backup, as all your data is on the same drives. That is a short term backup, but not a strategy. You should maintain at least two copies of your data locally, and at least one copy off line/off site.

Thank you very much for your explanations!

I just finished my hard drive's certification (amazing, it took only three and a half days - 4 x 10 Tb on Thunderbay 4 TB3 with MacBookPro 16 and Catalina - no problems or crashes ... I am very happy with the effectiveness of SofRAID XT 5.8 .1) and so I will, choose HFS + with enable journaling ... Thank you for your clarifications
(I have disabled the hard drives in standby energy saver)

So far, my backups were on small 2.5 WD hard drives USB3 enclosures (they are cheap and efficient) but I am not convinced that this system is good or the best, since those WD HDD 2.5 doesn't They are my trust ...

That's why I bought OWC Drive Dock USB-C for my new MacBook Pro 16 Catalina, to make backup copies on large 3.5 HDD discs, such as Seagate Barracuda 8Tb or similar, without great features, but safe and with relation quality / price / Terabyte

(I will also use OWC Drive Dock to plug my HDD's 3.5 and Mercury Extreme Pro 6G 1 Tb SDD from my old Mac Pro early 2008 and transfer my Apple user and data to my new MacBook Pro 16 Catalina)

Just only more question:
What software or flow to do my backup on my external HDD's?
any recomendations?
(perhaps, There may be OWC information about it somewhere ... I do not find it)

Thanks in advance!

OWC does not sell a specific backup application, there are many to choose from.

My preference is one of the several good applications that clone your files to another volume. Examples are Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, and Chronosync.

There are also several apps that perform backups, but I have not tested them recently, so have no recommendations at present. One app that is good and will be SoftRAID compatible in the near future is made by Acronis, and will be the Cyber Backup version available both in a local version and cloud backup version.

Apple prevents SoftRAID volumes from being startup volumes now, so what you actually want is a separate external disk as your startup volume backup.
