@softraid-support Thanks for the info!

Is the 32,000 hours THE indicator to replace a drive?

No. THE indicator is reallocated sectors, unreallocatable, uncorrectable sectors and on an older drive, unreliable sectors.

Lifespan of drives according to manufacturers is about 20,000-25,000 hours. 30 is what a good drive will get you. They start failing with higher frequency after that.

@softraid-support Thank you, sorry what I meant was the X thousands of hours is the indicator of the end of life of a drive.

Great information to know, thank you!

Hi there - I am having a similar issue with a RAID5 array on an M1 macbook pro - I got a notification that 1 disk was predicted to fail, started the replacement procedure but am hung up on the validate step. After a few hours of validating it forces a restart and I don't know if it validated correctly or not. I tried it on an intel imac with the same results. I've attached the support log I generated for it. Any help will be appreciated!

@epop

I do not see any activity in the log (validate).

Run SoftRAID

Open the log (utilities menu)

Move it to the side, and in SoftRAID, "Validate" the volume.

Observe the log. Is there an entry there that a validate has started?

Hi - thanks for your reply! Yes, according to the log it is validating when I follow your steps. It reports to be validating in softraid as well.

Also, I should say - I searched the log back to Jan 5 for the validation attempt corresponding with the support log I sent earlier, and the log confirms it was validating then as well - here's a section confirming it. I don't know why this doesn't show up in the tech support document. As you can see, it validated for about 6 hours and then the computer restarted but I don't see a confirmation of completed validation anywhere

Jan 05 1057 - SoftRAID Driver: The volume "Bowser5" (disk7) has started validating. Incorrect blocks will be updated.
Jan 05 1637 - SoftRAID Driver: SoftRAID driver loaded, version 6.0.5.

@epop

What if you try verifying the disk?

Does it complete, or error after a while (panic) Or complete?

It may be that the disk is hanging causing a panic.

Thanks for the suggestion - i'm giving it a try and will report back. If it is causing a panic, I'm wondering if I'll still be ok to replace the disk

@epop

I would recommend updating your backups, then run First Aid on your volume, make sure it "passes" (Disk Utility First Aid)

then replace the disk.

Update: the verify completed but it did hang as well:

Jan 07 2255 - SoftRAID Application: The verify disk command for disk disk5, SoftRAID ID: 090203F605051100, SATA bus 0, id 0, lun 0 (Thunderbolt) hung while reading (offset 5,000,969,322,496, i/o block size = 11,755,520). This disk should be replaced immediately.
Jan 07 2256 - SoftRAID Application: The verify disk command for disk disk5, SoftRAID ID: 090203F605051100, SATA bus 0, id 0, lun 0 (Thunderbolt) completed successfully.

I tried running First Aid on the volume (which I assume means the whole Raid5 array, not the individual disk) and the first aid failed, giving me the following:

"First Aid process has failed. If possible back up the data on this volume. Click Done to continue."

and in the details "Repairing file system. Volume could not be unmounted. Restoring the original state found as mounted. Unable to unmount volume for repair. : (-69673)"

I'm not sure what to do at this point.

@epop

You know you have a bad drive now, at least.

Manually unmount the volume and try First Aid again.
